Like announcer Joe Buck said: the five hours were worth every minute--at least for Red Sox fans. David Ortiz hit a bomb over the right-field fence to keep the Boston Red Sox slim hopes alive against the New York Yankees for the American League Pennant. From my living room it appeared that all 35,000 or so fans remained for the dramatic, 12th-inning home run (It was almost 1:30 in the morning!). It was an awesome site. And for all you Francona haters: the man managed an incredible game. From pulling the infield in to nail Godzilla at the plate early on to keeping closer Keith Foulke in for eight outs, Francona made a lot of gutsy moves that paid off. The Sox may be down three games to one, but Pedro pitches later today and Schilling waits in the wings. Coming back from a three game deficit has never happened in the baseball postseason. But to be a Red Sox fan is to be eternally hopeful.
Yankees beat the Sox with minimum effort in three games; takes Sox twelve innings to beat them one game.
I'm a Sox fan but please stop drinking the coolaid.
There ain't no comeback. Just a prolonged inevitablility that the Yanks are going to the Series.
ASDF, don't be so jaded. Baseball Prospectus claims that the Sox now have a nine percent chance of winning this thing (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/postseasonodds.html). I'm certain, however, that they left out the zero after the nine!
Yeah, he did managed a perfect game. About time. Starting Belhorn instead of Pokey was a bad move though. Belhorn looks like crap. Francoma is out of his league here, guys a really poor mngr! But I do see the greatest comeback in sports about to take place. Go Sox!
God love ya' Dan. You are a true, die hard, RS fan!
But, I'm not being jaded. Just as brutally realistic and logically honest as I was going into this thing as a partial observer.
The Sox are a good team, but the Yankees are the opitome of a serious, professional recking crew.
In any big game setting, when it counts, the Yankees have the advantage. In my humble opinion.
Was at the Pats game two weeks ago and listened to the Boston fans and wondered at their giddy conversation with regards to how they wanted the Yankess and not the Twins in the ALCS.
It's reality check time.
ASDF: in one post you say your are a "fan" and then in the next post you say it's time to be "brutally realistic and logically honest." Never the twain shall meet, brother! Fan is short for fanatic. Even when their team is down three-zero in a seven game series, fans still believe. I still believe. More kool-aid, please.
Ok then, I suppose by that definition, I am not a 'fan', per se. So let's just say that the Sox are my professional baseball team of choice.
I will certainly continue rooting for them.
However, I guess I'm just not nuts enough to 'believe' given the current state of the team's overall performance and W/L ratio in the ALCS and the businesslike approach to the Series that the Yankees have demonstrated.
Carry on, if you must, Mr. Flynn.
Terry Franconna should be drawn and quartered in gov’t center. Anyone including the batboy could have made the same decisions last night. Why Mark Bellhorn is allowed to play is beyond me. Pokey and Doug sit the bench and are brought in when innings go past 9. Why aren’t they starting?
Coma has not used a pinch hitter once in this series! Dave Roberts could start on most ML teams, yet he rides the pine! W/ the exception of pinch running stints. Which he's like 38 for 41 stealing 2nd. He'd look good in RF. Trot is great but obviously injured. At least he moved Bhorn out of the 2 spot, 3 games too late!
Auc, a few weeks back I was all over you about being all over Francona. After paying closer attention to his managing I must agree now that he is not the greatest guy for the job. Im am not saying that the list for his successor is long however I do believe that Coma should go back over this season game for game with someone with first hand knowledge of how to manage a baseball team and learn from scratch situational baseball. This man baffles me with his lame aproach to coaching. He keeps Bellhorn in a game that he had no business being in in the first place. Didn't they make trade deadline deals to improve defense? Bellhorn flat out stinks at second base and although Pokey cant hit his weight I am almost sure the play he booted late in the game would have been handled easily by Reese. To get to my point Francona will not make a decision before something bad happens or it is so obvious that he has to because he is so scared of making the wrong call. By keeping Bellhorn in the game he can defend his actions by Bellhorns clutch hits during the year. Like I remember saying to you earlier Auc, "let the game play itself out" well thats exactly what Francona does in the dugout! Maybe someone should let him know that he is in a do or die situation and his next late decision could be his last. Its time to manage the Sox inside the dugout and not from section 23 in the stands or at home on the computer. WE ARENT DEAD YET LETS GET BACK IN THIS THING!!!!! GO SOX
I know that there would not have a been a post about baseball had the Evil Empire won last night, so the question is, when the Pats finally lose will you "forget" about your little NFL competition that week?
I taught Terry everything he knows. You just watch how he manages game 5.
Jesus! What the hell was the Red Sox brass thinking of when they hired those hippie burn-out indigents, The Cowsills to sing our national anthem? I was embarrased and furious those nitwits represented Boston on a national stage.
RD- The Cowhills. Where did they find these freaks? They were probably wandering around some pasture in Vermont, arguing over which mushroom to eat! Maybe Peter, Paul and Mary can sing today, if Peter's parole officer will let him. I doubt it though, too many kids in the stands!
Those wretched beatniks are from Newport, RI.
Terry Franconna should give the Sox a fighting chance by putting himself on the DL tonight.
Sox guaranteed Game 7 with the win tonight. Game 5 with Pedro, Game 6 with Schilling, then Arroyo in 7.... this is the tightest 3-1 series ever. And the Red Sox have to be favored, with the matchups the way they are.
Honestly, if the Sox are going to beat the Yankees, they can't just dominate them in 5 or 6 games. What kind of history would that be? But being the first team to come back from 3-0, to beat the Yankees at the Stadium in Game 7... now THAT's something special. What a great year to be a Red Sox fan - it finally paid off!
And I should mention - I am anything BUT a Red Sox fan. But if I were, I'd be awfully happy right now.
The game just ended and I dont think i can take much more of this!!!! Ortiz is just incredible
I had to stay up until 10:30 pm on Sunday to see the win...that's loyalty.
I am neither a Sox or Yankees fan but I am hoping for a game 7 b/c I actually have a ticket for the game. That would be an incredible game to get to see.
