Bin Laden Tape

Osama bin Laden notes in his latest video that "burning living beings is forbidden in our religion," and then admits that he has no "innocence of the blood of your sons on the 11th." The transcript, particularly the hypocrisy of condemning the burning of people in the abstract while waxing nostalgically about a real instance of this, is rambling and confusing. His understanding of U.S. history is superficial, repeating, as he does, myths about President Kennedy--an escalator of the conflict in Vietnam--being assassinated for trying to stop a war in which he introduced American troops--em, advisors. Praising Noam Chomsky and lambasting "neoconservatives," bin Laden elevates those he seeks to damn and debases those he seeks to elevate. Embracing a crude Marxism that sees profits behind every war, paying salaams to trendy causes such as global warming, and blaming global capitalism for poverty, bin Laden sounds--and I never thought I'd say this--like a leftist.

I can see where this is leading...
Islamofascist-->Leftist-->Neocon.

I don't know. It was rambling a bit but I don't think your assessment is all that accurate on one point.

He makes one statement about neocons (by name) convincing Bush that he has no option other than continuing the war. That doesn't seem to elevate them in my opinion. And he also mentions that we should read Michael Scheuer to understand Al Qaeda better, and I think he is right about that one since Scheuer was the head of the CIA Bin Laden unit. So his mentioning of people doesn't in itself mean much as far as their status.

Outside of the fact that he is irrelevant old news, he did a good job convincing anybody who cared to listen why one should not vote for the leftist Dems in the next big election.

But, didn't he look maaaaarvolous!?

Why is this creep still running around? After 6 years we still can't find him? Ridiculous! What happened to Dubya's promise to hunt him down?

Who cares if he's found or not, he's impotent and has been diluted to a talking point.

Posted by: asdf on September 13, 2007 07:43 AM

So you're saying he should be let off the hook?

Posted by: Mike on September 13, 2007 01:01 PM

No, of course not. If and when we can get him, we should. But I'm getting sick of people using our failure (so far) to discover and prosecute OBL as a way to impune GW's competence and seriousness.

If you agree that terrorism will go on with or without OBL, that should answer all questions regarding how important he or his imminent capture are.

The reality is, whether or not the old towel head is found, the war on terror will go on and we'll have plenty more current and relevent villains to apprehend.
