Hockey Is Back

I waited until the final day of 21st Winter Olympics to tune in. Better late than never. The USA-Canada hockey game was a classic. Coming back from a 2-0 deficit, the overmatched U.S. team dramatically tied the game with less than 30 seconds left. I mentioned my affinity for the Pick-6 after the Super Bowl; the score off the pulled goalie ranks alongside it in sports excitement. But a storybook game required a storybook ending. Skating on their home ice in Vancouver, the Canadians (I felt ripped off that none of their skaters looked like they had played in the Iron League) won the gold medal in overtime. Sidney Crosby is the new Wayne Gretzky. Like the Raiders-Patriots snow bowl and Castillo-Corrales, I felt that I had witnessed something special by tuning in. If you missed this game, you missed one for the ages. If you missed Shaun White, Apollo Ono, and the rest of the Olympics, you're a lot like me.

Great game! And the U.S. team was (as they were in the first meeting with the Canadians) younger, faster, skilled and, for most of yesterday's game, the better team I thought.

The problem of us was Canada's domination in OT.

Crosby, the new Gretzky? Get a grip. Good, but not even close.

I thought the game was good but it wasn't THAT monumental. While the game may have mean't a lot to many Canadians some I know expressed the sentiment that it wasn't that they wanted Canada to win they just wanted the U.S. to lose, whether that had been to Canada or someone else.

Watched a good chunk of the Olympics, if you want excitement you should have watched short track speed skating. The races are short, fast,a lot of crashing and usually some controversy.

In regards to Apolo Ohno, here's something to keep in mind when you see him over the next couple weeks showing off his medals. Some of them he recieved not because he was the fastest skater but because the people in front of him crashed leaving the field open for him to win.

Great hockey game. However, I agree with asdf, Crosby is a good player, but Gretzky will always be in a league of his own. That is why he is 'The Great One.'

This was a great game. It was very similar to a late round NHL playoff game. Every shift was intense.Makes you wonder why the NHL doesn't strive for this type of play. I asked a friend, who played in the league, why can't the NHL game be that up and down and he said it was because there isn't a goon on the ice looking to take your head off.I like the Olympic OT way better than the anemiac NHL OT and shootout too. The Canadian team is very talented as is Crosby. But Crosby isn't close to Gretzky, as he didn't even play all of their power plays. Gretzky would have logged way more time on the power play. Ovechkin to me is the best player in the game and a lot closer to Gretzky's talent. Why the Russians couldn't manage a medal was a mystery to me. All in all a great story for hockey.

I too was very surprised with the Russian Team. Looking at the names on their jerseys, they were a who's who of elite NHL players but played weak together. In the first period of the Russia/Canada game, I had to rub my eyes to believe that it was the Russian team as Canada made them look like a college level team.

It strikes me that guys like Ovechkin are not great but look great when playing against a more watered down talent pool in the NHL.

This is why I was impressed with our Team U.S.A.. They dominated most every team in the tournament and were a, pretty much, lunch pail group who really clicked as a team. Skilled and hard working. In fact, at the beginning of the game yesterday, Al Michaels made a statement that only about three or four on the American squad would make the Canadian team. He exaggerates, but a good point. Even accepting the Silver, they did us proud I think.

Still, they looked consistently good throughout the series and it took the supposedly superior Canadians OT and not a great goal to win it.

Couple of blurbs about the commentators:

Roenick was a breath of fresh air. Honest and excitable to a pleasant fault and a damn good an@lyst. And that emotional "Euro trash" slip o' the tongue by Milbury - Priceless!
