The Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo fight on Showtime Saturday night is the single greatest fight I have ever witnessed in more than twenty years of watching boxing. The entire fight could have been fought within a phone booth. Corrales and Castillo traded blows for ten rounds. Both fighters now appear as if wearing Halloween masks. It was brutal. The action was non-stop. The fight was truly incredible. Joe Goosen, Corrales's trainer, had it right when he observed: "These two should never fight each other again. It's too much."
As round ten began, I proclaimed it the greatest fight I had ever witnessed. Round ten proved to be the greatest round I have ever witnessed. The frame's drama stands unmatched. Castillo sent Coralles to the canvass 27 seconds into the round. Corrales spit his mouthpiece out to gain time. In 27 more seconds into the round, Castillo again sent Corrales to the floor. Again, Corrales spit his mouthpiece out. Tony Weeks, who refereed the fight to perfection, deducted an additional point from Corrales. Coming into the round, the fight seemed close to even. With Castillo looking good to win a 10-6 round with two knockdowns and a point-deduction for his opponent, a decision seemed out of the question for Corrales.
Joe Goosen, Corrales's trainer, grasped this. As he delayed in reinserting the discarded mouthpiece, Goosen forcefully issued the most effective corner advice delivered in some time: "You gotta f---in' get inside on him now!" Corrales took the advice. After tasting the mat twice in one round, Corrales went to work. He brutally let loose a fury of unanswered punches, leaving Castillo out on his feet against the ropes. Referee Weeks correctly called a stop to the action at 2:06 into round 10. It stands with Ward-Gatti I as the greatest fight in recent memory. If you miss the replay, or forgo seeing Corrales's future fights, you are not a sports fan.
Before the fight, Diego Corrales announced that he would "go through hell to beat Castillo." He would and he did. Unbelievable.
Better than Hagler-Hearns round 3?
Better than Hagler-Hearns round 3. In Gatti-Ward II (the weak sister of the trilogy), there was an unbelievable round where Ward looked like he was on queer street and then rebounded to beat on Gatti by the end of the round.
Better than Tyson/McNealy?
I'll have to see it to believe it. Duran, and I believe Barkley, had an unbelievable turn around in 88 or 89 too. Hagler/Hearns, though, was a mother f%&*&*&G freak show.
Better than Clay/Ali vs. Chuvalo?
how can someone w/o showtime see this match? Is it replayed where I can get someone to record it?
Funny thing is that I changed my cable plan from Showtime to HBO to see Toney win the WBA HVY title from Ruiz (YES!!! Unification has got to be on the way!) and to see the Brewster/Golota WBO Hvy Title fight which takes place in a couple weeks. In the midst of all the heavyweight excitment I had forgotten about the Corrales/Castillo fight. Arrgh!!
Well the last fight I enjoyed was Mormeck/Braithwaite for the WBC-WBA Cruiserweight unification title. Excellent match!
I saw Mormeck-Braithwaite. A lot of action for big men. If I remember correctly, Braithwaite dominated the first round but then pretty much got beat up the rest of the fight. HBO usually has better boxing than Showtime, but with Corrales-Castillo and the upcoming Tyszu-Hatton fight on regular Showtime and the Tyson comeback on PPV now was a bad time to switch, Ron.
Is this why ESPN is running the Classic feed of all the old 60s and 70s heavyweight fights? Are they trying to remind us what the division used to look like when there weren't nine titles? (I think Holyfield still has the Arizona Kiwanis belt he won back in '02 from Max Baer.)
The lower weight classes are where the action is now. I heard about this and wish I'd seen it, but don't get the premium channels.
better than boom boom mancini and duck do kim?
Although the heavyweight division currently resembles the pre-Tyson days, the heavyweight division did experience a golden age in the 1990s. Holyfield, Tyson, Bowe, Lewis--these are some pretty big names to be fighting all at one time.
Ever hear of Carmen Basilio? One of the greatest battlers whoever climbed in a ring.
I have heard of Carmen Basilio. Middleweight. He beat the man many consider the all-time greatest fighter, Sugar Ray Robinson. Unfortunately, he fought before television went color so we don't get to see him much on ESPN classic.
Dear Dan Flynn,
How may I get to see a re-play of this fight (Corrales vs Castillo)? I missed the replay last evening & I don't see it listed again in the TV guide.

Check out the May 10 post, which links to Showtime's replay schedule on this fight.
Could not AGREE more, ive seen a lot of fights but this one truly blew me away. These guys went 120 percent from round 1-round 10, it takes a bit away from the fight if you know what happend before but I had no idea. I mean by round 7 I was standing up and screaming at the television. Once round 10 came I was alsmost on my hands and knees thanking the powers above to have provided me with the gift of watching the most amazing fight in history. Then when the trainer said those words (who by the way looked like the biggest flamer ever) and Corrales came back I was running around screaming..I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. If you watch the fight you have to see Winky Wright at the end of round 10 in the background going absaloutly ballistic, hes jumping up and down in disbelief. I think this fight motivated him to destroy Trinidad
Jason doesnt ike boxing..hes anti violence but tanner and i thought it was a goley gosh darn good fight
