U2 releases its 13th album, No Line on the Horizon, tomorrow. They mark the occasion with a week in residence at the Ed Sullivan Theater to play on Late Night with David Letterman. I mark the occasion by issuing my list of the ten greatest U2 songs (Longtime readers will remember that I did this with Led Zeppelin a few years back). U2 on YouTube--enjoy.
10. Exit
9. A Sort of Homecoming
8. All I Want Is You
7. Running To Stand Still
6. The Unforgettable Fire
5. Stay
4. Ultraviolet
3. With or Without You
2. One
1. Bad
If I had to choose between One and 40....
...I have to go with 40, hands down.
I'm glad to see someone else recognize the greatness of "Stay." I was in a band that covered that tune soon after Zooropa was released. In my opinion, it's a much-underrated album, and "Stay" is perhaps the best song. I'd also like to put in a plug for "Dying Man" from War and "Electric Co."--especially the live version.
Your list is missing some of the early stuff. Out of Control, I will follow, 40 . Also, I like some stuff from Rattle and Hum: Hawkmoon. I like the fly too.
I've always liked U2 but never a diehard fan.
But, I caught Rattle and Hum a few months back and was hooked.
They are a very tight band with some great original stuff and happen to be an excellent live act.
I would say anything off of Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby.
One other comment after watching those clips.
On a technical scale of guitarists, looking at the ones at the top, Edge would probably not make the cut of the greatest 20, maybe even the top 50.
But he is great in his own right and although not technically as sound as some others, I find him to be one of the most unique guitarists anywhere anytime.
For U2, he is the greatest.
