Santarchy

In New Zealand, several dozen drunk Santa Clauses spraypainted buildings, urinated on moving cars from a highway overpass, knocked over trash cans, and nonchalantly stole beer from a convenience store. A spokesman for the Santas described the rampage as an act of protest against the commercialization of Christmas, but no sane person believes him. Some people find it fun to get drunk, break things, steal, and urinate on motorists. That's all. No word on if the real Santa Claus took part in the berserk revelry.

Whatever happened to protesting the "commercialization" of Christmas by putting a manger scene in your yard, instead of Santa and his sleigh?

I wonder how the world would react if a crowd of youths, dressed as Muslim imams, did the same thing?

I would suspect that these were just a small isolated group of bad Santa's Helpers.

Never see the elves pulling this cr@p.

Sounds like a great subject for some 30-minute cable television program: "When Good Holiday Symbols Go Bad!"

Actually, the Imam Rampage may be closer than you think. I recently learned that Rammadan is comparable to Christmas in terms of a retail buying season (at least, according to the Moroccans I know). So, the revolt against against the commercialization of Rammadan may be on the the way. Though, I suspect that any such revolt may involve more powerful explosives than were used in New Zealand...
