Should anyone ever decide to title a book "Profiles in Cowardice," the Democrat-controlled Congress would make for appropriate subject matter. When an election approached in 2002, such Democrats as Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and John Edwards voted to authorize the president to wage war in Iraq. They shirked their Constitutionally-mandated authority regarding war. Should things go bad, this distinction of "authorizing" rather than "declaring" war would serve to get them off the hook politically. Now that the Democrats control the federal government's purse, they could end the war any time they please. But that would mean taking responsibility. Instead, while soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines die, they act as the rubber stamp on President Bush's frequent and gargantuan budgetary requests. Earlier this week the president demanded $46 billion, on top of the $147 billion he already requested from them, to wage war (with almost all of that money going to wage war in Iraq). Congressmen have the power to stop the war when they choose. Don't count on this. They had the exclusive power to declare war, and they punted on that too. It's safer for them to boo from the sidelines.
This gets back to what was discussed in an earlier post. Batman said "They are so enamored w/ holding power that even serious matters like war are just fodder for campaigning". This is true. And even though that statement applied to both parties, the Democrats in particular are paralyzed at the prospect that they will make the wrong move by making a decision on anything. This has made them look like the completely incompetent fools that they are.
Even though they like to use their opposition to the war as a political club, the Dems do not want to be seen as the Party of Defeat so they won't vote to unfund the war as it's a two for: they won't get caught up in appearing to not support America and our troops and they can continue to beat Bush over the head with 'HIS' war.
Funny side note...Dirty Harry Reid made a statement that the fires in California were a result of Global Warming. Later, when asked if he thought that the fires in California were a result of Global Warming, he said that he never said that. Harry's losing it.
I agree ASDF,
The Dems are still the worst of the parties on such things. I think there problem is that they DO hate America in several major ways: 1) they hate our sovereignty/independence; 2) They hate our traditional culture and mores which are Anglo-Christian; 3) They hate our (slim) majority moderate-conservative "whiteness"; 4) and they hate our economic disparities and our wealth both a result of inegalitarian freedom. I could probably add more.
Anyway, since they really do hate America in some fundamental ways and are always striving to revolutionize us (import a new electorate, destroy our sovereignty, destroy our inequalities [i.e. freedom]), they are politically vulnerable to people perceiving the truth and voting them out. So they are paradoxically deathly afraid of the will of the people yet incapable of ever doing our will since they disagree w/ us so.
We need a new ruling class. Remember when a legitimate complaint of Bill Clinton's Presidency was that he did everything based on polling data? Geez, now neither Congress or the President gives a damn about what polls indicate Americans want. I would have thought that meant an improvement and some real statescraft, but it really doesn't look like it. It is just soft tyranny now.
