The pope gave a talk about Greeks and self-obsessed Muslims imagined it was about them. Here's the text of the pope's controversial lecture to give everyone context.
Thanks for finding the text.
How completely irresponsible of whomever it was in that lecture hall who decided to misrepresent the talk and report it in a way to get irrational Mohammedans riled up. He actually gave them credit for having a holy book which gives contradictory messages, much as certain Christian sects fail to read the Old Testament in light of the New and thus justify all sorts of atrocities based on the example of the ancient Israelites.
I hope he takes this as a lesson against ecumenism.
While the speech itself was about the greeks the quote in question concerns Islam.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached". The emperor goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul.
1) Mohammed brought evil, and so he himself must be evil.
2) Mohammed brought violence, which is
incompatible with the nature of God, which makes Mohammed incompatible with the nature of God.
I already explained on the last post on this that your interpretation is contrived. Are you serious about your ridiculous interpretation?
1 and 2) You clearly aren't a Christian as that is horridly flawed logic based on a non-Christian understanding of philosophical anthropology. What an irresponsible and twisted reading you are giving it, just the same as the angry Moslems.
(War is an evil . . . Joe Lieberman voted for war on Iraq . . . Joe Lieberman is Evil).
Bruce what is being discussed as evil is Islam, as I replied to your response in the first post. You insist on making a distinction where none exists. Mohammed is Islam, Islam is Mohammed. You can't say one is evil without saying the other is as well.
Hey, the Palestinians have attached five churches because they had no idea how to interpret what the Pope said. The religion of peace strikes again! Violence to prove they have to defend the "Religion of Peace" is like f'ing to preserve virginity.
Said like only ASDF can say it!
Stop calling us violent!
IT MAKES US CRAZY!!!!
ARRRGHGHG!!!!!
STOP IT!!!!!
Obi,
Mohammed is not Islam, what are you talking about? He is considered by Muslims as the Prophet of the one true God, Allah. He is thus a founder of a religion in a similar fashion to John Smith w/ Mormonism, Abraham and Judaism, and L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology (not that the last should be considered a religion, but go figure). To attribute something to these founders is logically seperable from attributing the same to the religion as a whole, even if attacking the founders would be seen by the faithful as blasphemous or otherwise objectionable. But that is besides the point.
The pope never attributed anything to Mohammed or the Muslims at all. The only thing he pointed out was that one can look at the Koran and find seemingly contradictory injunctions, one of which (Jihad) he claims is opposed to reason. The point was one on the proper relationship between theology and reason.
Jihad itself is a controversial concept for Muslims, and theologians of the faith hold multiple views on its meaning and role in the religion. The pope hardly even took a stand on this internal Islamic debate. At most he implicitly suggested that the Christian theological tradition would side w/ "reason" as opposed to a hard-line fundamentalist reading of that one passage on holy war which he mentions.
The reaction by various Muslim leaders and individual believers proves the truth of an insult that was never even lodged against them!
