...And Smarter

Unfortunately, the results of the most interesting test at the combine are a secret. The best performer ever in it, gasp, was a punter out of Harvard, which probably gives away what kind of test it is. The Wonderlic test measures intelligence, and it's the "dumb" offensive linemen that generally score best while the so-called "skill" positions generally score poorly. The test, as administered to prospective NFL players, consists of 50 questions of ascending difficulty answered (or not) in 12 minutes. A score of 20 indicates average intelligence. Colt Dwight Freeney (35), Eagle Kevin Curtis (48), and Patriot Ben Watson (41) are among the league's brightest. One of the highest recent scorers on this test, perhaps not coincidentally, is the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Still higher, than Eli Manning's 39 is Drew Henson's 42. He plays baseball too. Make your own inferences.

Well, there's no doubt that Romo is smarter than Brady (that's why Brady has to cheat). But both of those QBs are Einstein compared to my main man Vince Young. VY reportedly scored a 6 on the Wonderlic. I remember when he was presenting an award (Video Music Awards, ESPY, I can't remember) with Leinart. Vince could barely read the telepromter. So here's a guy who graduated from one of the top research universities in the country, and he can barely read! Does that mean he can't be a great QB? The jury's still out, but I'm beginning to wonder whether English isn't the only thing he has trouble reading. NFL defenses are much more sophisticated than the defenses Vince threw against in college. And back then, if the pass wasn't there, he could just run 80 yards for a touchdown. Or he could run untouched to the pylon with for a TD to take the lead with under a minute to play against USC. It still brings a smile to my face.
