Why Not Us?

Something told me that I'd be hearing Liza Minnelli's version of "New York, New York" after Tuesday night's game. In the tradition of an injured Willis Reed limping on to the court to play game seven of the 1970 NBA Finals, Curt Schilling pitched seven innings of inspired baseball to lead the Red Sox over the Yankees.

As if this series needed anything else to make it memorable, cops in riot gear guarded the field in the eighth inning, Alex Rodriguez delivered a karate chop to Bronson Arroyo's left hand, and the umps had to confer to award Mark Bellhorn a home run. Lest I forget, the Red Sox are also the first team in the history of Major League Baseball to force a seventh game after being down three games to zero.

They do this all over again tonight. It's only appropriate. The Sox and Yankees played this same series last year. Here's hoping 2004 brings a different outcome.

Hats off to Curt Shilling, what a warrior that man is! I cant explain how different it feels now watching a Sox game when a guy like Shilling is on the bump. You just know the guy would do anything possible to get you the win. I wonder how many players would even be on the mound with the injury Curt has? He makes me proud to be a Redsox fan and I only wish the guy had a rubber arm and could pitch again tomorrow. We have already made playoff history and today we will steal the pennant right out of the Yankees hands and settle the score once and for all! Did anyone see that Ghost of Ruth once the Sox went up 4-0? I didn't and although we havent won anything yet I firmly believe that the curse has finally been negated! Why not Us?

I knew it all along.

I told u Belhorn should be benched! I admit Coma was right I was wrong. Biggest game of D.Lowes life! It sux i have to go to lamaze class tonight, I cant watch the game!

Posted by: Auc on October 20, 2004 09:42 AM

Auc, if you and the wife could watch and make it through tonight's game, you wouldn't need lamaze class!

Birthing will be a piece of cake by comparison.

:-)

Good Luck.

Auc, there's a time in every man's life he has to make a stand. That time has come for you tonight. Tell your wife you can't go to lamaze class. If necessary, hire some gentleman in need of steady work to accompany your wife and pretend he's her husband. Tonight is historic and it hasn't even happened yet. What I mean by this is if you knew Carlton Fisk would hit his game six homer in advance, would you still miss it?

Didn't Robin Williams answer that question in GWH? But that was Hollywood! I really cant go to Lamaze. Maybe I can get a video online instead of class?

Posted by: Auc on October 20, 2004 10:34 AM

Who's pitching tonight? Pedro on short rest? Wakefield even though he pitched in relief in game 5?

Posted by: Brad on October 20, 2004 10:39 AM

Francona implied DLowe in his post-game interview, but I hope it's Wakefield. DLowe doesn't pitch well on the road. If it's Wake, Mirabelli should start and not Varitek.

Posted by: Dan Flynn on October 20, 2004 10:57 AM

How Lowe can you go.

Posted by: asdf on October 20, 2004 10:58 AM

Meant Wake....

Posted by: asdf on October 20, 2004 11:02 AM

They will do everything in their power to keep Varitek on the field which is why they are apprehensive with pitching Wake. As we say the other night it is not a smart move to have a guy catch a knuckleballer when A. he hasnt been his catcher all year minus two innings B. After catching 44 innings in the the past week during this emotion filled series V-tek just may be to drained to focus on a dancing ball for any period of time? I want Wake to get the call but how do you sit Tek after whats happened? You cant and Lowe will start because of it!

Posted by: morris on October 20, 2004 12:53 PM

Auc cut your seeds off now and just hand them to her! That way you can be at class and practice your breathing and watch the biggest game of our lifetime! Maybe you can name the kid Bucky or Boone? Congrats on the kid brother but I cant support missing the game unless the kid is hanging out in the delivery room. Its breathing class dude there will be other times along the way to practice such! Not tonight! This is the end of your residence in the Boston area if you miss this game! You can look forward to being a Orlando Magic fan! Hey at least you can pick any seat you want?

I understand wanting Tek on the field, but a). I feel more confident in Wakefield than Lowe; b). the pitcher is more important than the catcher; c). Miribelli is not that big of a drop-off, particularly with the amount of work Tek has put in behind the plate; and d). if Wake is going to be pitching some part of the game, why not have him pitch the beginning and then have Tek pinch hit for Mirabelli and replace him once Wakefield is relieved. If you don't do this one of two bad scenerios will occur: either Tek catches Wakefield for several innings or Mirabelli replaces Tek when Wakefield enters and takes Tek's bat out of the line-up late.

Posted by: Dan Flynn on October 20, 2004 02:02 PM

I agree with your scenario however it isnt that I think Mirabelli will be a big drop off in offense or defense, however in a game seven and a come back such as this it comes down to moral. It would be like starting Kapler instead of Nixon because he has better numbers against a certain pitcher. Game one or two fine that could happen, but when your down three games to none and battle back to force a seven you come out with what got you to that point. Putting Mirabelli in the starting line-up at this point albeit the correct move to get Wake on the mound wont happen because of my theory altough I honestly agree that it would be better suited to do it earlier in the game i.e. starting than coming off the bench.

I get what you're saying--have your best nine players on the field. I just really, really dred what will happen if Tek catches Wake. We dodged a bullet the other night. If they for sure Wake will pitch at some point during the night, why not do it when it will be least disruptive--at the beginning with Mirabelli catching and then Mirabelli goes immediately when Wake goes.

I also view this as a game where the normal rules regarding a pitcher's rest, as well as who is and who isn't a relief pitcher, do not apply. If it's close, I expect to see Pedro pitch an inning or two. The only guy who should be considered unavailable is Schilling.

Posted by: Dan Flynn on October 20, 2004 02:52 PM

agreed

Posted by: Bob Morris on October 20, 2004 02:55 PM

D.Lowe = Sinker. As long as D.Lowe keeps the ball down we'll be ok. If Wake comes in Mirabelli will be catching him, or Coma signed his death warrant. I'd rather see Wake out there early, if his pitches aren't moving u pull him and insert Tek/Lowe. Coma manages ok with a lead so the first couple of innings are very important. What was up w/ the cops? They come off the field when the sox take the field? Yankee fans are front running pukes!

So are guys who dont watch game seven!

Posted by: Bob Morris on October 20, 2004 03:39 PM

My superior intellect and salesmanship has enabled me to watch game 7! Sox are on, lamaze is out!

Posted by: Auc on October 20, 2004 03:51 PM

I am proud of you Auc! You can admit you were on your hands and knees pleading! By the way how long are you going to be her servant after such negotiations? You aren't fooling us Pal!

Posted by: Bob Morris on October 20, 2004 04:02 PM

You're da man, Auc!

Although, I think there's some good History Channel on tonight.

Posted by: asdf on October 20, 2004 04:15 PM

What a game? As to Morris' comments. Dude c'mon get a clue, u and many on this blog know me well. I've never been on my knees begging for anything in my life! Fortunately I have a relationship w/my wife that many can only hope for. I didn't say a word about the game, Brenda wanted to stay home. Why? Because its about mutual sacrifice.

And we all lived happily ever after! You should write for Hallmark!

I hope you realize an internet troll is the lowest life form below the thing Kahn inserted into Cpt. Kirk's ear.

You may be a wiz at football Morris, but it appears you don't know $hite about relationships. Real ones that is.

Good women do not want to see their man beg. And, some of us have good ones.

Go Sox!!!!!

How wrong we can all be sometimes.

Talk about a real life inspiration!!

WOW

Posted by: asdf on October 21, 2004 09:09 AM

Auc if I have to say that I am sorry for joking around then something is wrong! Why would you take what I say seriously? If you know me at all then you know I like to joke around and if I offended you then I am truly sorry but I think this is ridiculous! I dont need a speech from you about relationships though and certainly not from people I dont know, asdf. If it bothered you so much that you would leave a message at 1 in the morning then you should have emailed me or called but bringing this crap up in a blog is petty and brings you back to the wallet stealing days of old! I come on this site because it is fun not to be a pain in someones ass or to insult someones manhood. If you think that I was doing the later your wrong and hope you see it the same way?

Posted by: Bob Morris on October 21, 2004 09:27 AM

You're right. I didn't need to comment. None of my business.

However, no need to act like an Angry White Man.

That would be me.
