Changing of the Guard

In one week's time, the two biggest draws in boxing tasted the canvass--for more time than allowed under the rules. Last week it was Oscar staying down for ten, Saturday night it was Roy Jones Jr. Whereas Oscar lost to one of the all-time greats, Jones got knocked out by a fighter with nine losses on his record. I personally prefer watching Arturo Gatti over De la Hoya, Jones, and Tyson (who also lost this year), but De la Hoya, Jones, and Tyson have been the most consistent pay per view, and HBO, moneymakers for some time. Their stock, however, has diminished greatly. It's time for some new fighters to step up: Ricky Hatton, Antonio Tarver, Jermain Taylor--are you listening?

I want to see Tyson fight James Toney. It would be a good matchup for Tyson and his best shot at ever becoming champ again.

Last Thursday Toney had kind of a rough come back after the year off due to his achilles tendon injury. He looked good, he won. He dominated. But it went the distance and came to a decision. He should have easily KO'd his opponent, had ne not injured his left arm in Round 1. He seams to be accident prone. James Toney is 36. Clock is ticking. Now Tyson vs Toney would bring a good draw in PPV - They would both put on a great trash talking session. But as much as I like Tyson, I respect Toney even more for his skill, work ethic and multiple tite reigns under multiple weight classes. And if Toney making Holyfield look like journeyman last year says anything - I'm sure it'd be a true end for Tyson. Do we wanna see that?

Yeah, Ron. I'd love to see that fight--but only if Tyson took it seriously. Toney doesn't match up well with a lot of heavyweights because of his obvious height and reach disadvantages. But Tyson and Toney are basically the same size. Neither of these guys runs from opponents. Toney-Jirov was a classic slugfest (maybe the best big-man fight of the last decade). And we all know Tyson's style. Before this weekend, I'd have loved to see a Toney-Jones fight at heavyweight too.
