If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Rodney Dangerfield failed to make it big as a comic in his late teens and early twenties. He quit, and returned to comedy later in life to find success through dozens of appearances on The Tonight Show. He may be best known for his "Can't get no respect" line in his stand-up routine, or perhaps his portrayal of a nouveau riche golfer in Caddyshack. But I prefer him in 1983's Easy Money, where a gambling, drinking, overweight Rodney Dangerfield is forced to mend his ways to inherit a massive sum of money. Dangerfield turned in an awesome comedic performance--with Joe Pesci by his side and some dude named Hector wooing his daughter--playing, essentially, Rodney Dangerfield. Carrying on the tradition Willie Nelson started in the Carter years, Dangerfield admitted to smoking pot in the White House--just say yes--when Ronald Reagan was president. Dangerfield was into hip-hop ("Rappin' Rodney") before Jay Z and Eminem, and was one of the few non-athletes to shill Lite Beer from Miller. Dangerfield's most amazing accomplishment might be living to the age of 82, being that he appeared the walking embodiment of poor health. Al Czervik is now burying the hatchet with Judge Smails on the 19th Hole in the sky. Rodney Dangerfield, rest in peace.
Irony at its best here! I was at Barnes&Nobles last night with my girlfriend and while looking through the biographys i happend upon a Rodney Dangerfield book. I had just had my first sighting of Rodney in some years last friday during Still Standing(funny show) and said to my better half that I couldn't believe that Rod was well still standing! Caddyshack is a movie that I have watched probably 100's of times and till this day still quote close to daily lines that seem to somehow fit into everyday life. Rodney was a man that used happenings in everyday life to stage a career that made him a very funny man. I will miss him and look forward to all his better movies being played as a tribute in the coming weeks. To quote Al Czervik,"Golf courses and cemeteries, biggest waste of prime real-estate". Well Rodney the latter may be true but I hope you rest in peace no matter where you lay!
Still Standing was last Monday by the way! My bad, all days not filled with Redsox games and football seem the same!haha
Last night around 11pm I put my Easy Money DVD in the player and watched one of my favorite comedy flicks. I own about 10 DVD’s and Easy Money id one of my favorites. I was introduced to this movie in college and have been a huge fan since. I think this was an easy roll for Dangerfield to play; it had all the vices he enjoyed in his own life. I could think of no other actor who would have nailed this character the way he did.
Dan – FYI “Julio” was the name of the character who was wooing Dangerfield’s daughter Allison (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh). One of the best scenes is when Julio and his buddy attempt to break into the Capuletti home and Julio gets cold feet and wants to go play “space invaders.”
Today, we are ALL "Melons".
I almost forgot Back to School, what a great movie. "this one i just can't figure out? Here's you, here is Julio, but what's with the midget?"
"I'm so bad...I'm so bad..I belong in detention!"
"Easy Money" was great.
"Hey, you're a beautiful woman. You must have been something before electricity".
good one asdf!!!! "good kid, great kid...Now I know why tigers eat there young"
"So What?", "SO WHAT, SO LETS DANCE"
Shane,
In its randomness, the scene featuring Journey's "Anyway You Want It" is truly awesome. The best part of that scene is when the camera is way at a distance and you can see the golfer's at Dangerfield's hole doing all sorts of weird dances. My favorite scene may be the caddy free-swim (from 1:15 to 1:30?). The black guy fishing on the row boat's reaction to Dangerfield's reckless seamanship is also awesome.
What do you want to stand for Danny? Goodness or Badness????...I want to be good sir!....GOOOOOD, GGOOODD, Good,GOOD!!!!!!
I sent guess younger than you to the gas chamber!! Didn't want to do it. Thought I owed it to them!
guys works better than guess, I guess?
and Dan come out of the blog world for one second if you could? Was there any better dance than the one Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds did when the Omega Moo's came to their party in a movie? If you really are stumped just ask Mr. Hanley for his opinion since he saw said dance performed with Hopkins pinned down in a corner!!!
