I Am David

Sick of Kinsey, Alexander, Fahrenheit 9/11 and other movies made for the bluest of blue America? May I recommend I Am David, a more inclusive film that won't insult your values in exchange for your money? The film opened in limited release in selected cities this weekend.

The story traces the escape of twelve-year-old David from a concentration camp behind the Iron Curtain. David escapes from Bulgaria into Greece, and then stows-away on a ship bound for Italy. From Italy, he treks northward toward Denmark for reasons unknown to him. Unaware of what he's looking for, David finds trust--a luxury foreign to concentration-camp survival ethics. "The world is full of terrible people, and they all do terrible, evil things," David explains. "I've seen them." Outside the camps, he discovers another side of human nature.

The PG-rated I Am David in many ways resembles Hope and Glory, Empire of the Sun, and other not-just-for-kids movies starring children. Jim Caviezel again portrays a self-sacrificial man, and we are introduced to Brit Ben Tibber, who plays the title character. Significantly, I Am David features an anti-Communist sub-theme alongside a respectful treatment of Christianity. Along the way, the movie-goer experiences stunning scenic shots of Italy and Switzerland, and unpleasant visuals of life in a Bulgarian concentration camp.

I AM DAVID is one of the bigger projects to come out of Arlington (MA) native Micheal Flaherty's production company-Walden Media. Their sister company Crusader Entertainment scored a big hit earlier this year with RAY...hopefully I AM DAVID will pull some impressive numbers at the Box Office. Walden, Crusader, and Lions Gate are three production companies out in Hollywood that actually like to add a religous and moral elements to their films. Check out www.walden.com for more.

Do I know you Sean? Has the identity of Apu-DB been revealed to me?

Posted by: Brian on December 6, 2004 02:49 AM

Sean F is definately not Apu or DB and knows whereof he speaks particularly when it comes to film production companies.

Sean: hope all is well. Haven't seen or talked to you in a while. Week before last Tim and I wandered into your new work venue to see you but you apparently were not on.

Kitty O'S misses you.

Hey Brian. How's it going... What the hell are you talking about ?

Though this got mostly bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, I'm inclined to trust you on this one, Dan. -especially since I found out it is directed by Paul Feig, the driving force behind one of my favorite TV shows, Freaks and Geeks. He has proven through that show that he knows how to accomplish an emotionally powerful scene without being overly sentimental.

Sean,

I have a friend who I had sent a link to this site a while back named Sean F---- who knows everything about movies made and about to be made. He is also a whacked out looney lefty-libertarian sort. Short knows who I am talking about.

So, anyway, I took a guess since you gave a fake email address.

My apologies for being presumptuous.

Hey Brian no problem. That actually is my real email address. Email me anytime. Just none of that NAMBLA spam.
-Sean.

Mike. Convince Tim to come by tomorrow (Tuesday). If not I'm there every Tuesday and Sunday and some other times here and there...Send me an email.

80-year-old-woman:
you must be a pretty hip 80 year old if you watch freaks and Geeks! it is surprising to me that Paul Feig would make a anti-Communist movie...Freaks & Geeks was liberal leaning. would you agree?

Posted by: peggy on December 6, 2004 04:55 PM

Peggy,
Thank you, I am pretty hip, because you see, I am trapped in the body of a 19 year old girl.
Personally, I am more suprised about the Christian themes that Dan mentions than the anti-communist themes. Liberals still have enough common sense to hate the cruelty that occurred under Communist regimes. However, I am glad to see the Christian themes because the most disappointing part about Freaks and Geeks was how it sometimes advocated an atheistic ideology. But, perhaps that wasn't Feig himself who added that element to the show.

Gee I was wrong twice regarding Sean F.

I am a tool.

Husker Du rocked by the way, at least early Husker. Bob Mould has made some pretty darn good music in general (at least until recently).

Why was it disappointing for you to see Freaks and Geeks advocating an atheistic ideology?
