Washington, DC is the safest city in America. There are no gun murders, armed robberies, or drive-by shootings because the city bans the private ownership of firearms. When the DC government permitted citizens to have guns prior to the late 1970s, there were murders, armed robberies, and drive-by shootings. But news reports suggesting the persistence of that kind of thing are dead wrong. I know because I live in gun-free DC. The media must be mistaking my Washington for the Washington on the left-hand corner of the U.S. map. After all, if guns aren't allowed how can gun crimes occur?
Perhaps inspired by Washington, DC's amazing success in stopping gun violence, San Francisco city supervisors are placing an initiative on the ballot next November that would imitate the gun-control laws of the nation's capital. If passed, city inhabitants would have ninety days to forfeit their guns. The proposal would allow guns just for people "actually employed and engaged in protecting and preserving property or life within the scope of his or her employment." But why allow anyone to possess a gun? With guns out of the hands of people, the police--just like the rest of us--won't need guns for protection...unless...unless some people actually disobey the law.
The police will need their guns for the out-of-towners, particularly those from red states.
As a resident of the great state of Texas, I can legally carry a concealed handgun just about anywhere (banks, schools and churchs being the most notable exceptions). Sometimes I dispense road rage with my gun, other times I just shoot people for fun. But when I travel to D.C., I leave my gun behind because it's just not needed. D.C. is populated by the most loving, law-abiding people of good will you could imagine. The thought of violent crime just never enters my head.
That is, with the exception of using the bank on campus that has been robbed 10 times... or eating at the local pub that was the scene of a triple homicide last year, or driving down 16th street where running gun battles between gang members has been known to occur.
I have a buddy who's a police officer in London. Most cops in the UK, as you know, aren't allowed to carry firearms. If Rick needs a gun, he has to radio HQ to deliver one to him via truck. Often this can take a very long time. Meanwhile, he's had to subdue multiple individuals using just his bare hands and a truncheon. Fortunately, the police are rethinking their stance due to the proliferation of drug gangs who have no qualms about using guns. They're slowly learning that most criminals don't obey gun control laws.
Guns don't kill people, I kill people.
Maybe if they made it against the law to kill people and steal things, then they would stop doing it.
I wonder if any San Franciscoans will decide to not give up their guns peacefully?
I certainly believe your comments were tongue in cheek, since your tag to "safest city in America" shows DC once again having the honor of "Murder Capital of US". As a Mainer I can say guns here are not something to be feared.
Sure Frank it is true that people from Maine who have legal firearms aren't as opt to use them for the sake of evil, however I have to believe that the same people from Maine are very likely to have sex with their sister or marry a cousin or something!
Morris... do you even know where Maine is? Because it doesn't seem like you know anything at all about it. Your comments don't make any sense.
I mean, at least if Maine were down by Louisiana, you could be playing on the whole redneck stereotype.
But Maine? As in up by Canada?
ya, dont play dumb with me young man you know exactly what I am talking about and it most certainly pertains to Maine! You know the one that borders Canada!!!
Don't play dumb with you? I have no intention of doing anything of the sort. Do you have any personal experience with Maine? Because I sure do, and it most certainly does NOT pertain to Maine.
My father is from Maine, and I've spent a lot of time there in the course of my life, and I have no idea where you're getting your information from.
