Love Makes a Family

"Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able," Brad Pitt tells Esquire about his relationship to Angelina Jolie. Everyone? How about this trio? Angelina and her brother? Mister Ed and Wilbur? Everyone? Really?

Until a grasshopper and a moose are allowed to obtain a marriage license, I, Brad Pitt (sanctimonious narcissistic butthead), will not marry anymore.

Isn't is far more likely (than this political self-righteousness) that she, an insanely free-spirit, just doesn't want to marry him?

Posted by: skeptic on September 9, 2006 03:24 PM

I think Pitt is a genius, now he never has to tie the knot.
Every single guy out there should remember that line.

Well, using the reproducible methodology of the American majority, it seems to be that people who practice incest should be granted legal marriage.

The methodology? God Commands It...

*Isaac married Rebekkah, his first cousin once removed. Genesis24:12-51
*Jacob married two of his cousins , Rachel & Leah. Genesis chapters 28-29)
*Zelophehad's five orphaned daughters were commanded by God to marry cousins. Numbers 36
*Eleazar's daughters each married first cousins, as they were instructed. I Chronicles 23:22

I didn't believe the idea that gay marriage would lead to a slippery slope, and argued against it. I was wrong, and I concede the point. I think that I still believe, as before, that it would be best to allow the states to decide for themselves on the issue, but as there may be some problems with that issue with regards to inter-state recognition, a national referundem may be necessary.

Now, as before, I would vote against legalizing gay marriage in any such referendum.

Samuel, "incest" is defined as "sexual relations between persons who are so closely related that their marriage is illegal or forbidden by custom."
I frankly don't see how, particularly in view of the customs of the day in ancient times, any of your examples make the slightest bit of sense.

And assuming for one moment any were remotely applicable, how would marrying a first cousin or sisters in the least degree justify homosexual marriage?

Posted by: Thom McKee on September 9, 2006 08:31 PM

Thom, by your thoughtful reply, I am assured you are not an American who uses the "God Commands It" argument. I am assured, however, that a good majority of Americans have a core belief that homosexuality (and it's state endorsement via marriage) is against God's will. And that is usually the end of the gay marriage argument for them. Occasionally, I hear these faithful provide more rational arguments, but the "God Commands It" core colors all logic.

In the above post, I simply ask these faithful to be consistent in their application of God's covenant, and let go their resistence to incest (I include "cousin marriage" as a degree of incest) and, for that matter, polygamy.

We need to get Big Government and Big Morality out of our private lives.

BTW Ben-T theres no such thing as a national refferendum in the United States.

Posted by: HeHe on September 10, 2006 01:09 AM

Nothing very private about government sanctioned licenses.

You realize that that statement is the same thing as saying that we shouldn't have a Rule of Law in the United States? All Law is the legislation of morality.

As was with Paris Hilton: who gives a fat rat's a$$ what these people do, say or think.

Outside of scoring a three way with Angelina and Paris, there's little they would have to offer.

Posted by: asdf on September 10, 2006 02:43 PM

Ben-T that is exactly where you and I differ.

The law may be informed by morality, but it is not the codification of it.

I suppose that you agree with your party's standard bearer Katherine Harris when she says that all lawmakers must be Christian.

"Ben-T that is exactly where you and I differ.

Okay. But you're wrong. Law comes about in society in no way other than a large enough group of humans believing that something is moral or immoral to enforce or ban it through the use of coercion.

I'm not sure what party you mean. I'm registered as a Libertarian.

Marriage is the union of two souls into

Dude, you totally need to get verification on the blog comments.

In other news, this is what happens when you allow gays in America to practice their sin:

Let's not let this debate get in the way of Opus' most important observation:

"I think Pitt is a genius, now he never has to tie the knot. Every single guy out there should remember that line."

Hollywood is the new $hithole of the US.

That would be procreation.

As for what being gay has to do with it, their biological incapability of engaging in that act might hold some relevance.
