Buchanan, Student Attacked

Late Thursday afternoon, I received reports of a professor at Western Michigan University physically attacking a conservative student who had attempted to photograph evidence of the destruction of posters promoting a lecture by Pat Buchanan. Early Friday morning, news reports, including this video, detailed an attack on Pat Buchanan as he spoke at the school. The two WMU assaults come on the heels of a student attacking Bill Kristol at Earlham College and a mob heckling Ann Coulter at Kansas University. For those confused about why "team tolerance" would act so intolerantly, let me break it down for you: Tolerance means free speech for Ward Churchill but no speech for Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, and Bill Kristol.

At least Kristol deserved it.

These are shameless acts by people who believe in free speech on one side of the aisle BUT not on the other. It doesn't matter what their views are they should be able to speak without the indecency of a few who directly oppose what they're saying. I don't necessarily agree with what they're saying however I would listen intently and with an open mind. Freedom of speech is something that should not be attacked... It is a right we're privileged to have and a few certain people are intolerant of this fact.

Ann Coulter said it best in her latest book, "Liberals dont get mad at Conservatives for lying about them, they get mad at Conservatives for telling the truth about them"

Posted by: James on April 1, 2005 09:32 AM

The socially and intellectually cloistered professorship of the majority of colleges and universities are having a hard time dealing with the growing numbers of conservative students. Most of these kids are more involved and better informed of real world events and have either grown up in an environment of more conservative values or have adopted those values based on life experiences.

For today’s college instructors, free thought and debate is ok as long as it conforms to their leftist understanding on how the world works.

The times they are a changing. The liberal academic dinosaurs are losing ground.

HAHA that was funny, "at least Kristol deserved it" i agree!

Posted by: rob on April 1, 2005 10:16 AM

Kristol stayed with "pie-face" to finish his point after the incident and didn't storm off.

Buchanan continued Q&A and then joked about cleaning his hair and chose not to press charges.

Bush is really good at self-depricating humor.

Just wondering if the conservative "tight-asses" are actually more light hearted than say, the last two democrat presidential candidates. Generalizing yes, but I have often felt this to be the case. I would think Bill Clinton would be an exception.

Posted by: rob on April 1, 2005 10:26 AM

If leftists are now having to resort to attacks, this may mean that conservatives are finally making some progress in the battle of ideas. At least I hope so.

rumor has it that wasn't actually salad dressing but leftovers from one of Clinton's wild nights with Monica!

Posted by: maury on April 1, 2005 11:52 AM

Yeah, leave to a lib to be using salad dressing made from leftovers from one of Bill and Monica’s wild nights.

Brian,

To be fair, I'm the one who loathes Buchanan. T-money generally agrees with my view of PB, but isn't as passionate in his hatred of him.

Also, I think attacking any speaker like this is insane. Just because someone is an anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic douchebag doesn't mean he should be denied freedom of speech.

Posted by: Ben Litchman on April 1, 2005 01:41 PM

Right Ben. Just because someone thinks that a nation without borders is no longer a nation and that American foreign policy should be more American does not mean he should be denied freedom of speech. Could not agree more.

Posted by: Robby on April 1, 2005 02:12 PM

It’s amazing to me how people love to demonize Buchanan because he holds opinions that differ from theirs and can actually back those opinions up with statistics and solid supporting data.

Buchanan loves this country and preaches to protect it at all costs. His thoughts and opinions explain as much in detail the left doesn’t seem to understand. Yet, he is known by the left as a hater and a poster boy for all things evil about conservatism.

The sad fact is that liberals are more concerned about globalism than they are of strengthening and supporting their own country. It’s a good thing that people like Buchanan who possess a brain and a voice are around to set things straight.

Posted by: asdf on April 1, 2005 02:37 PM

Oh yeah, the tolerant left allright. Bill Kristol getting hit in the face witha pie is funny? Maybe if he was in a Three Stooges episode. These so called tolerant lefties are beginning to get violent. Pies today, gunshots tommarrow? Granted, a pie to the puss is not going to kill anybody but the fevered pitch and hatred the left so enthusiasticaly embraces might get nasty.

Posted by: Patrick J Flynn on April 1, 2005 03:59 PM

Let's not forget the Bush campaign workers that were hit by cars and campaign headquarters that had windows shot out.

For all of the crap spouted by the left about the evil right, the right doesn't stoop immature or violent tactics.

Looney left baby!!!

Posted by: asdf on April 1, 2005 04:30 PM

Actually, I did hear a story of a member of the Buchanan Right hitting 41 with a snowball in NH once. Could be just a rumor though.

Posted by: Robby on April 1, 2005 04:40 PM

Anyone who disagrees with Israel to any degree in your eyes Ben L is anti-Semitic. Buchanan has always been an American firster his arguments based in fact and common sense and what's best for the United States not Israel or any other country for that matter.

P.S. Ben T probably has a term paper that he wrote last year during his sophomore year of High school enlightening us all why Pat Buchanan is truly anti-Semitic.

Posted by: Dennis on April 1, 2005 04:51 PM

What! Why do you say those things about me?!?!? They are all lies!!! Uh, oh...I mean yeah, that's me...right? I'm sorry I have to use the bathroom...I think I'm going to be sick.

Posted by: Litch Benman on April 1, 2005 04:58 PM

Whooops, come to think of it...I don't think it was 41. I believe it was Bill Bennett. Thanks for your understanding.

Posted by: Rob on April 1, 2005 05:19 PM

I just love how Buchanan is always the punching bag by kneejerk liberals who don't take the time to learn about political figures. They say he's a racist because he opposes affirmative action, when in fact, the portions of affirmative action he opposes (as was quoted in his 1996 presidential ran) is that "affirmative action-by quota or busing" is unAmerican. People don't even understand the meaning of affirmative action. Quotas and busing are 2 attrocities that result from the failure of affirmative action and even the most staunch affirmative action proponents would agree with such. But somehow, to kneejerk liberals, he and anyone else that oppose such attrocities are bigots.

Well what a wonderful little circle jerk I have stumbled in on! Seriously though guys, guys, from the bottom of my heart...
Go screw yourselves.

Dude,

I'm worried you'll be the next speaker targeted with one of these perishable projectiles. Hopefully they'll at least throw something you like, such as a hamburger or some spare ribs.

Might want to invest in a goalie's mask for future appearances.

Hahah yeah, might be a good idea. College hippies and paleocons dont mix well.

Thank you for posting this information... I was not even aware of this - though that could be because I have been out-of-state, and away from the internet, since about Wednesday.

I had recently seen the news about how the College Republicans there were promoting the Pat Buchanan event on "Cesar Chavez Day" (yes, that was my question to Michelle tonight...) - That was very brave of their CR group to do; I was thinking of trying to contact them, suggesting that they frame that event by pointing out Chavez's views on that issue, and how his position on that was actually consistent with ours.

I actually just heard Mr. Buchanan on television, so I know that he is okay.

It was great seeing you (again), and talking to Mrs. Flynn today as well.

I haven't slept since about 10:40 AM CST yesterday (about 35 hours ago), so I should get to bed now, but before that, I wanted to let you know: I was talking with Ben Norquist for awhile today, and I brought up the issue of blogging, and about how there was the "CPAC Bloggers" thing, as well as the Republican National Convention bloggers. I was thinking of blogging during this Conference... Ben said that there was nothing officially organized for blogging this event, but he would see if something could be arranged, and if those of us who are conference attendees, and who are bloggers, could get together, regarding that. We can see about this tomorrow... It would be neat if we could all see a compilation of the coverage that this Conference receives in the Blogosphere, as well as in other mediums.

Update: After seeing the photo at the Campus Leadership Program weblog, I checked the latest news on this, and saw that it was salad dressing.

Ignorant left-wing students...

This was a great night... And I already know that this conference will be one event that I will remember for a long time to come. See you all tomorrow (and I apologize in advance if I'm a little late getting there in the morning...).

Thanks, Aakash. Aakash and some other FlynnFiles readers are in attendance at a conference the organization I direct, Campus Leadership Program, is putting on. Great question to Michelle tonight, as she herself acknowleged. I'll make an announcement about blogging at the conference tomorrow. We have computers at LI, so if you don't have a laptop you can use my office. Also, I'll be blogging on Michelle Malkin's excellent talk at CLP's conference later tonight.

I'm chairman of the Western Michigan University College Republicans, and trust me we know the truth about Cesar Chavez. Our flyers said "celebrate cesar chavez day with pat buchanan" We know Chavez was an enemey of illegal immigration and a support of higher wages and more jobs for American workers. Unfortunately the press wouldnt report on this and the leftists wouldn't believe us.

It was a disgrace what happened on our campus, but it is another example of the tactics the left will use to silence conservative speakers.

You expect dirt heads to act like this (pies, salad dressing, etc.) occasionally, but more disturbing is a jackass professor attacking a student. That man should be jailed, and his employment should be in great question. Suppressing speech, yes, that is what liberal education is all about.

Posted by: Webster on April 2, 2005 08:34 AM

Actually, the professor that attacked the student was a women's studies professor. This attack occured after she had sent her class out (during class time) to tear down our flyers...so one can imagine the message our professors are sending to students. There was also a kid who showed up with a garbage bag FULL of our flyers that he went and personally ripped down....

Nice to see you again Aakash. You and I used to argue with Patrick Ruffini at his site right after the war began. I can never forget a name like Aakash.

"Anyone who disagrees with Israel to any degree in your eyes Ben L is anti-Semitic."

That's false. I don't know anyone who agrees 100% with any country. I'm talking about people who are dishonest and disingenuous, as Buchanan was, when he acted as an apologist for Yasser Arafat (after his death) by stating well, he won a Nobel Peace Prize! Anything to demonize Israel... including sacrificing intellectual honesty.

"P.S. Ben T probably has a term paper that he wrote last year during his sophomore year of High school enlightening us all why Pat Buchanan is truly anti-Semitic."

Again, it's me, Ben L, who has no respect whatsoever for Pat Buchanan. Also, I guess William F. Buckley, Jr. must be an ignorant high-schooler for thinking PB is an anti-Semite.

"Litch Benman"

Comic genius!

I am comforted with the knowledge that the Flynn-Filers/Pat Buchanan Loony Right probably won't ever gain substantial political support.

Posted by: Ben Litchman on April 2, 2005 11:46 PM

I'm not very quick to call people anti-semitic. Buchanan however, has said some eerily anti-semitic things in the past.

Who has Ben consistently accused of being anti-semitic BESIDES Pat Buchanan? Or was that just a totally substanseless ad hominem?

Posted by: Ben-T on April 3, 2005 12:40 PM

I guess if I state the Yankees won the world series in 2000 I am a Yankees fan. Nobody on this site has mentioned Pat Buchanan more than you Ben L. I think you need to re-read your own posts. You are the one obsessed with Buchanan. If you polled the whole country whether we should give more foreign aid to Israel or the rest of the world. The country would overwhelmingly respond how? Ben? And with their answer would they be deemed anti-Semitic?
You are not a fair-minded person Ben L.

Posted by: Dennis on April 3, 2005 01:48 PM

Dennis, are you suggesting that the Pat Buchanan branch of conservatism is not dominant here? I don't care that it is -- I like this blog and I like arguing with many intelligent people here. But that's the obvious reality.

"If you polled the whole country whether we should give more foreign aid to Israel or the rest of the world. The country would overwhelmingly respond how? Ben? And with their answer would they be deemed anti-Semitic?"

You act as though we're only giving foreign aid to Israel. We give almost as much foreign aid to awful countries like Egypt. If you're actually going to feign a moralistic approach to foreign policy, let me remind you that we give two times what the entire rest of the world gives to fight the AIDS epidemic internationally.

"American foreign policy should be more American"

Care to clarify this, Robby?

I whole hardily agree to disagree with myself...what? Does that even make sense? I...I..I can't believe what I just said, ooooh crap!. Sorry everyone, I think I just peed the bed. Damit not again!

What the hell? Are you four years old? I'm guessing this is most likely Short. The large pile of ad hominems without any substance is her trademark.

Posted by: Ben-T on April 3, 2005 06:56 PM

haha I hope Mr./Mrs. Benman continues to post. It just serves to embarass the Old Right. Keep up the pee-pee jokes -- you have a natural gift.

Posted by: Ben Litchman on April 3, 2005 07:45 PM

NOTE: Short, I was just kidding. Just thought I should preemptively note that, as I decided I didn't feel like getting in another flame war.

Posted by: Ben-T on April 3, 2005 08:11 PM

I think I take myself way to seriously. I need to take a step back and chill. I need to enjoy the little things and realize this is a blog, where opinions and idea's are exchanged.

This isn't a place to try and influence anyone's core beliefs or ideals. It's a place to understand other points of view. I think I need to stop preaching and break my habit of over reacting. I will need everyone's support. Thank you in advance.
