Human Events Reviews ACHOTAL

Michael New calls A Conservative History of the American Left "a real tour de force" in his review of it in Human Events. New writes, "[U]p until recently, no one has written a comprehensive history of the left from a conservative perspective. This void has been neatly filled by Dan Flynn's recent A Conservative History of the American Left." Why not go read my book and find out what Professor New is talking about?

Dan, I have read two of your three books. I have not yet picked up your latest. I have also seen some of your public appearances. I regard you as brilliant.

As an atheist, I differ with your religious views. One day, I'd like to hear why you believe the way you do.

Cheers.

Thanks Andrew for the kind words. I wish I were as religious as you imagine me to be. Basically, I think both faith and reason suffer when you try to make rational what by definition is extrarational, or in some cases, irrational. Because of that, I think it's a fool's errand to try to verbally persuade people why one's invisible deity is the real deal. All I will say with regard to my belief in Christ is that I have read the Bible, and the New Testament is not only inspiring but appears to me to be the inspired word of You Know Who. If it's not, Jesus at least provides a righteous example of how to conduct oneself. I think I do a fair job dissecting politics, history, ideas, culture, and economics, but there are certainly scores of people with sixth-grade educations who outdo me in the theology department. For that and other reasons, I generally avoid public proclamations on such questions in which I lack any depth of understanding.

You're welcome, Dan.

Your thoughts are similar to my brother's, who is a Christian. I suspect I would enjoy a conversation with you on the matter. Perhaps you might write about it extnesively one day.

In any event, keep up the great work. I look forward to it.

PS. Lately, I think you have been at your best when blogging about economics. Though, perhaps I am biased, as I am an investment banker.

Andrew, your question was to Dan - and this post was on an entriely different topic, so I won't hijack it beyond the following. But I would just note that though the Lord our God is "invisible," the whole of creation bears His fingerprints. More importantly, God has shown Himself, walking among His people in the flesh in history through God the Son. Faith is ultimately a gift and goes beyond mere rational discernment, as Dan notes, but there is much empirical evidence - starting with the eyewitness accounts of Immanuel, "God with us." If interested, I'd invite you to start your queries there, and keep asking questions.

Your book should be required reading for a socialist like BHO. Although, he’s so far gone probably wouldn’t matter. The recurring theme was that Socialism and small ‘c’ communism doesn’t and has never worked (they even wised up in the Soviet Union eventually) as much and as often as it has been tried. But, O and his bots will continue with the Party line.

Eric:

Thanks for the link. I did not think it polite to hijack this post with an off-topic conversation. If you'd like to continue the discourse, feel free to e-mail me at adavis429@gmail.com

ASDF:

"Required" reading? What is that - giving the statist a taste of his own medicine?
