Gayest Cartoon Character: Big Gay Al, yep.
Posted by Jose at January 22, 2005 03:12 AMSmithers from the simpsons
Posted by Goblin at January 22, 2005 04:54 AMMitch. Definitely Mitch. Although technicly he is a muppet.
Posted by Kip Dynamite at January 22, 2005 10:18 AMJohnny Washington Angry Youth! I finally figured out why he was so angry!
Posted by Maury at January 22, 2005 11:47 AMSmithers has my vote - he's obviously gay!
Posted by Davey at January 22, 2005 01:40 PMPeppermint Patty. Even her friend calls her 'sir'!
Posted by Trina at January 22, 2005 05:50 PMMan, I can't decide.
Pixie and Dixie were questionable, but maybe I am just saying that since they lived together.
Or how about Snagglepuss w/ his theatrical flair and voice?
O.k., my vote goes for Buttercup of the PowerPuff Girls. The show is great but she is a bit more than just a tomboy in my opinion.
My vote for most not-gay character would be Captain Caveman, he always had those babes, the Teen Angels, swooning for him.
Mr. Slave from South Park.
Posted by Finbar at January 22, 2005 10:14 PMWhile not exactly cartoon characters: the flute from H.R. Puffenstuff, of course, Sheldon from Sigmund the Sea Monster.
Posted by Homer J. Fong at January 23, 2005 12:20 PMSheldon from Sigmund the Sea Monster is an excellent call.
Posted by Dan Flynn at January 23, 2005 01:18 PMOf course Sponge Bob is gay! What do you think he does with all of those holes?
Posted by Ryan at January 23, 2005 02:49 PMEeyore.
He loses his tail in every episode. How is his tail held on? A nail.
So, he's getting nailed in the butt, frequently.
I'm here all week; try the veal.
Posted by Bill at January 23, 2005 03:15 PMI presume we're specifically nominating "in" characters, and not guys like Smithers or the Ambiguously Gay Duo. In that case I'd nominate Speed Racer's mechanic, Sparky. It's a slam-dunk. There's even an episode where Speed, needing a navigator for a race, decides to take his girlfriend Trixie. Sparky whines about it so much that Speed slaps him. Seeing it for the first time in 25 years was truly disturbing.
Posted by Nightfly at January 23, 2005 05:34 PMAlright. Now I am sure that most of you chuckle about Sponge Bob whenever you see my name. If I had a dime for every time someone asked me if I was Sponge Bob's Daddy I would get to enter PBA Tourneys for life. For the record, I am not related to Sponge Bob, and the accusations many throw out about me being involved in his paternity are mere speculation by the tabloids.
No, I don't think Sponge Bob is gay. He is written to children and children shouldn't be asked to think about sexuality like that. Sponge Bob is perpetually about 11 years old, so I don't think his sexuality is something he thinks about. Attempts to paint him as being gay, by both gays and gay-bashers are another symptom of the "us vs them" mentality.
Now then, for the lighter side.
My vote for "gayest" cartoon character ever. Gumby (okay, he was claymation). Gumby was often described as being "flexible." And I will defer to Johnny Carson as "Carnac" for more proof.
Carnac-"Turn around and do the 'Hokey-Pokey."
Answer-"Name the grossest thing Gumby ever did."
Be well,
Sponge
I have to agree with Finbar...Mr. Slave from Southpark is without a doubt, the most flaming homosexual cartoon character of all time. I don't think i've ever laughed so hard as when I watched the episode when they shoved a mouse up his, well, you get the point.
Posted by Christopher J. Doyle at January 24, 2005 08:59 AMThis is a tough one, especially when Big Gay Al and Mr. Slave are added to the mix. The Tele-tubbies of course deserve gay mention. Their gayness is obviously less than the two aforementioned fans of manlove, but any kid watching them for more than 5 minutes will probably start humming the theme to Queer Eye in no time. Also deserving mention are the Wiggles. Chartoon characters no, but I bet they're all gay. And Velma from Scooby Doo had to be a fan of the Indigo Girls and of course, Daphne. Freddy always had a smile on his face for a reason, people.
Posted by Scott at January 24, 2005 12:55 PMWhen people complain about "Spongebob" being gay, aren't they talking about Patrick, not Spongebob himself? I don't get cable, so I went to the Spongebob movie to see what the kids are watching. I thought it was a great cartoon, but was definitely disturbed at the sight of Patrick coming out as a flaming drag queen at the end. What the hell is THAT doing in a cartoon for 5-10 year olds???
Hearing the activist Christian groups complain about Spongebob homosexuality, I assumed they were talking about the Spongebob character Patrick, and I back their complaint 100%. Why in the world should little kids be thinking about homosexuality? All it does is cause taunts about who is going to turn out to be homosexual to be the leading form of cruelty for children. I don't think this is going to be a source of goodwill for homosexuals when the kids who have to live with this crap grow up.
Posted by Alec Rawls at January 25, 2005 04:55 AMThrough friends and family I know several kids in the target demographic, and only once have I ever heard any sort of reflection on the subject: my cousin (10) saw two girls kiss (on the evening news - thanks a bunch, ABC!) and her immediate reaction was, "Ew. That's icky."
I don't think Patrick's turn as a lady starfish was meant as any paean to transvestitism or homosexuality, and no 5-10 year old would see it so. Kids just laugh for the silliness of a boy dressed up like a girl.
Posted by Nightfly at January 25, 2005 11:03 AMPeppermint Patty, Definetly. Her freind called her Sir, and she could whoop up on all the neighborhood boys.
Posted by James at January 25, 2005 12:27 PMWithout question it's HE-MAN. Remember the dude's hair cut and his outfits. Plus he was jacked. Muscle worship is a common characteristic for these man seekers.
Posted by Feck at January 25, 2005 01:20 PMNot enough that these cretins have decided to queer the reputation of our 16th President, now they’re grasping at straws by trying to paste the gay label on harmless cartoon characters?
Sad.
Well, too bad the Wiggles are all married and have children, except Jeff.
Posted by Jody at January 30, 2005 09:55 PMspongebob, duh what the heck do YOU think is wrong with his, Patricks, Squidward, and Mr.Crabs?
