George Bush, 2004: "And the reason why I'm so strong on democracy is democracies don't go to war with each other." George Bush, 2006: "[W]hatever Israel does, though, should not weaken the Siniora government in Lebanon. We're concerned about the fragile democracy in Lebanon." Democracy, or whatever name one applies to representative government, is an excellent method of governance. But as an antidote to terrorism, war, and and any other modern horseman of the apocalypse, democracy is found wanting.
It is found wanting if it hasn't the strength to stand on it's own, and the moral strength to police itself. It becomes weak by the people failing to be vigilant, and expecting honesty and ethics from it's elected leaders. This only gets worse as people become apathetic, and the leaders corrupt, as we see in this country.
Forgive the expression, but "It's liberty, stupid." Representative democracy *as a means to liberty* is what is important, and as the Founders knew, will never flourish without virtue in the people.
When the "virtues" the people prize include complete subjugation of one sex, suppression of the natural rights of all, and complete world domination in the name of Allah, well, then democracy is a reaaaalllly bad idea.
