The Religious Wrong and the Judiciary

Think our legal system is messed up? An Islamic judicial board in northern India ordered a woman to marry her rapist. The trouble is--apart from the obvious fact that he is her rapist--the woman is already married....to the rapist's son. Thus, the board ordered her to divorce her husband. "The fact that the woman was 'used' by her husband's blood relative makes her [unclean] for her husband and there is no way she can be allowed to live with him," the Islamic kooks ruled. "She had a physical relationship with her father-in-law, and it nullifies her marriage," contends Mohammad Masood Madani, a cleric at the theological school that issued the fatwa.

Yeah, we're going to be able to reason with these people. Building Democracies in this part of the World ought to be easy.

With rulings like that it is our obligation to wipe muslims off the face of the earth. Thank god our Supreme Court isnt like that.....I shouldnt speak too soon.

That's pretty vicious. I particularly like the use of 'used' - women as chattel. Where's NOW when you need 'em? They're probably too busy gearing up to protect the murder of babies to care much about the rape and subjugation of Indian women.

I was quite frankly surprised that an ISLAMIC judicial board is in operation at all in India. Then I see from the CIA fact book that they have "personal law" that applies to each of the various religions in the country.

The crazy decision notwithstanding, I think this is a very interesting concept.
