Because You Can't Sue Mother Nature

A group of survivors and relatives of victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami are suing (who else?) the United States government. The group, which includes dozens of Europeans, alleges that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center failed to provide adequate notice for the natural disaster. But as its name implies, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is in the Pacific, not the Indian, Ocean. If you're unfamiliar with geography, the United States of America is about as far from the Indian Ocean as anyplace in the world. Although U.S. taxpayers bankroll the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, more than a dozen foreign countries benefit from the service it provides. Since the Indian Ocean is thousands of miles from our shores, the United States funds no similar center for that part of the world. If Thailand, India, and other nations surrounding the Indian Ocean aren't to blame for their failure to build a regional tsunami warning center, what makes the United States--a nation halfway round the world--complicit?

This can be used as a casestudy on the way the blame-America scam works.

1. Show the student(s) that America (through the PTWC here) was criminally negligible or that it was liable for the deaths of the Tsunami victims because its Pacific Ocean monitoring system did not in fact provide warnings on an Indian Ocean originating tsunami. Point out that the backwardess of many of these countries had anything to do with their ability to deal with weather challenges or other things; that raising such questions takes away from precious time that could be spent concocting anti-American sophistry.

2. Use this as another reason of why other nations must oppose American civilization, this failure to be omnipotent and perfect is obviously due to racism and imperialism.

3. Blame Bush.

From what my Lib friends say, it's Karl Rove's fault. The U.S. will never be able to make the rest of the world happy until the Libs get us converted to a socialist country like say, France. Then we'll be enlightened enought to admit that all that happens that's bad is the fault of the U.S..

Ya we are to blame for the Tsunami, because our country likes to spend Billions of extra dollars in aid helping out those poor slobs in those countries who dont give 2 sh!ts about us. Well put Dan.

It's all Bush's fault. Son of a B failed to make sure were were responsible for Tsumami warnings in the Indian Ocean and didn't sent enough billions of our taxpayer funded relief money.

No wonder they hate us. Who wouldn't! :-|~

Its not that they hate us. Its a love/hate relationship.
They love to hate us because when they file bullsh!t claims like that, there are some scum sucking lawyers out there who can actually win their case in court.
They hate to love us because they are jealous and want to be us. They know America is the land of the rich and home of the suckers. This country is too soft in situations like that. If it was up to me Id tell those people filing those claims to stick it up their rudy-poo.

It is only a matter of time before one of those marine monsters pays us a visit.

Truth is back!!!

Let the pessimism and fatalistic views begin...

Didn't Japan sue the U.S. government for failing to prevent the return of Godzilla?

Truth what do you mean by a "marine moster" -- like in "2000 Leagues under the sea"? Or do you mean like the US Marine Corps? I'm confused...

Anyhoo, about the post -- no good deed by America go unpunished, I guess.

We have our spineless government to thank for the way the World knows they can put the arm on us by negatively appealing to our sense of honor and fair play.

They know that the louder and more aggressively they squawk, the more money our country will forward to keep them quiet to show what nice caring people we are.

It’s not that we don’t always try to help. In fact, we are way too available to help.

As this shows, doesn’t matter what we do and we need to get over the fact that they may not like us.

Geez, talk about an inferiority complex.
