Iraqis fight harder to block freedom than they did to oust tyranny. With news of the thousandth American death in the Iraq war, one can't help but come to this uncomfortable conclusion. The brutal regime of Saddam Hussein provoked no uprising similar, even after the Gulf War, to what Americans face now.
The milestone raises an important question: Was it worth it? Other than Saddam Hussein sitting in a jail cell, there's not a lot to celebrate. The dead were sent to seize the Iraqi stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, prevent further acts of terrorism, and create a democracy in the heart of the Arab world. The WMD stockpiles proved illusory. Iraq has become a terrorist Woodstock. The notion that a bunch of James Madisons and Thomas Jeffersons were sitting around Baghdad waiting to install self-government if only America rid them of Saddam Hussein seems the stuff of comedy.
Why should Americans die giving freedom to the inhabitants of Fallujah, who die trying to block that freedom?
What's happening in Iraq is similar to what happened in the Soviet Union after the fall of Communism.
These were oppressed people who had no idea how to live in relative freedom. They apparently need a force to rule over them.
The difference between the two is that the Soviet Union has to handle their own problems. The U.S. intervened in this little love/hate relationship Saddam had with his people and they naturally took our forces up as targets to vent their anger.
These are primitive people who will not likely be able to handle their own affairs for years to come.
Does that mean that we stay as a force until they work it out? Nope!
We did not find the WMD's that were thought to have existed there but we did confirm the fact that Iraq is not a threat to us and displaced a brutal dangerous dictator in the process.
With that limited success made we now need GET OUT and let them get started on re-building their country.
We have never had a terrorist problem in this country per se. We have had and continue to have an immigration problem. I can't wait for the immigration ammnesty for our new brothers in democracy in the middle east. Both candidates would add to our immigration problem and thus create more opportunities for Muslim terrorists. This war has been FUBAR for a long time, and has had no positive effect on our so called terrorist problem.
These people are nuts. You can't reason with them. We need to pull our troops out now.
Why do you all hate America? Support the troops!
supporting the troops goes without question but its not the troops who make decisions on where to deploy and where to attack. no one in here hates america sean on the contrary we love america thats why as a group blog we talk about things that happen in this country and we stand by what we believe is correct, that is why our country is so great. we aren't the followers these terrorist bastards are we stand by what we believe but also are open to listening to reason at the same time. someone who is told to crash a aircraft into a building or strapping explosives on their back and blowing up a city block is a follower of insanity and stupidity.
Wake up and smell the truth. The continued loss of US American lives at the hands of terrorists whether in the Middle East, America, or another continent is imminent based on the historical proof. Therefore the argument to pull out of Iraq now simply postpones the inevitable, which is we will loose American lives at the hands of Islamic fundamentalist terrorist groups.
We have to realize by now that all Islamic fundamentalist terrorist groups collude because they are sympathetic to the same cause, which is one of extreme bigotry and intolerance of the female gender and any other belief structure. Until this is recognized world wide and dealt with for what it is, pure bigotry, or we can relegate the value of oil to nothing due to an alternative energy source, America is and will be forever under attack.
Therefore, if we do not face the terrorists in Iraq we will surely face them one day here, which I believe will result in many more victims.
I have a question that I’m hoping you brilliant fellows can answer.
Even though we have had limited assistance in our quest to ‘Free’ Iraq from the throes of a mad dictator and in the process have made the World a bit safer, why do we not have help through a strong military presence from the people who would immediately benefit the most from our sacrifices?
I’m writing, of course, about Israel. Am I wrong in my understanding that they are not part of our small coalition? And if I’m not, why are they not involved?
I think both Israel and the United States understand that overtly involving Israel in Iraq would be counterproductive. It would inflame the locals (Remember the hysterical reaction to the proposed Iraqi national flag that merely resembled Israel's flag?), and make any type of pro-U.S. Arab coalition--like we had in Gulf War I--impossible.
hahahahha.....I'm agreeing with most of you here..good thoughts Mike....but who is this Kem?? I mean Iraq was not a haven for terrorists until we got there. Going into Iraq played right into OBL's strategy. Now he has thousands of new targets in a poorly defended country waiting to be picked off. The answer isn't to fight a war we can't win, its to get out and fight the war we can win. Take the troops out of Iraq and go after OBL. That's the way we win this war.
db, I usually think your a clown but here i think you are 100% right! Good post
Great victory by the Pats and everything, but they really missed Ted Washington clogging up the middle last night.
Guess who's responsible for that uprising HH? George Bush senior and his defence secratary Dick Cheney. They encouraged the Shittes to rise up, and then didn't back them up. The most dishonest, backstabing action in American forign policy history. We abandoned an ally, and Bush should be ashamed.
