After proposing guidelines for medically-sanctioned infanticide, doctors at the Groningen Academic Hospital in Holland admitted that they have already begun to administer deadly amounts of poisons to infants that they judge unable to live. Issuing such a judgment on a person, and then proceeding to kill that person, is certainly one way to vindicate your "medical" assessment.
Not to worry, because the Dutch find all of this very controversial.
"As things are, people are doing this secretly and that's wrong," explained Eduard Verhagen, who runs the hospital's children's ward. Would it make it any better if doctors were murdering babies in the open?
If this callous disregard for human life strikes you, in the words of Yogi Berra, as deja vu all over again, check out Edwin Black's War Against the Weak (buy it here), which chronicles early twentieth-century efforts--particularly ones here in America--by scientists to decide who lives and who dies.
Three years ago, the Dutch legalized doctor-assisted suicide. Now, doctors are killing infants, obviously with no one's consent save their own. Who's next?
If you've ever heard the phrase "slippery slope" and were confused by its meaning, just look at how the Dutch practice of doctors aiding patients to commit suicide has evolved to encompass doctors murdering sick babies.
This scares the heck out of me. Is the day of eugenics coming soon? Would they have been able to abort me because of my bad genetic illnesses? Scary to think about. One person already told me that I shouldn't have been allowed to have kids. Perhaps they are right to some extent...people like me are part of the reason health care costs so much.
Still, I have a right to live. So do those 4th trimester babies.
Be well,
Sponge
Someone actually said that to you Sponge Daddy? You shoulda dropped a bowling ball on their toes.
I used to mock pro-aborts in high school by extending their logic and demanding a 6 month period after birth in which a womyn could kill her child if she decided she didn't want it, you know, if it got coliccy (sp?), or cried too much, etc. I mean, after all it is her body (given that a baby is as much a part of the mother's body outside the womb as it is a part of her inside the womb.)
Then I got to college and found out that utilitarians had already beaten me to the idea (see Peter Singer for example). And now the Dutch admit to have been doing this for awhile. And I am supposed to think that the middle ages were somehow worse than modernity? Or heck that the 1950's were somehow benighted and backa**wards?
As Brian says, this is nothing but a logical extension of the pro-abortion position.
You'd like to say to abortionists that, unless they are willing to kill newborns, they should oppose abortion. The scary truth is that most would go the way of the Dutch rather than give up their "freedom" to murder.
Such people lack the proper starting-points for political discussion. They should not be reasoned with but punished.
The Nazis were major proponents of eugenics. You'd think that doctors from a country that lived under the Nazi yoke would abhor such a barbaric philosophy.
