The House That George Tore Down

Major League Baseball players voted Yankee Stadium the toughest place to play. They will not have to play there much longer. The Yankees broke ground on a new $1 billion stadium on Wednesday. The new Yankee Stadium will open in 2009.

No matter how revamped the new one will be, FF readers have no idea how sad this makes me.

Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park are two of the most beautiful sports stadiums ever built.

I bet they'll give it some lame corporate name, like AOL Park or something like that.

Mick, it will still be called simply "Yankee Stadium", though apparently certain places within the stadium will have corporate sponsorship/names, such as "PNC Bank Centerfield".

My enemy's enemy is my friend, as someone said recently. Tear the damn thing down.

It's not the same park anyway, it was heavily renovated in the 70s.

Screw the Yankees.

Actually, there has been little problem w/ this in NYC. The place is really quite ugly and pretty much a dump these days.

The history is there but the mystique really makes going to the stadium for teh first time quite a let down, as it was for me and my brother when I later took him. All the big yankee fans I know were only concerned that the new stadium incorporate some of the traditions, and since it will have the same dimensions and many other features no one is that concerned.

The only controversy was when Steinbrenner bluffed that he would move the team out of the Bronx if he didn't get a sweet deal. But that died down quickly.
