St. Patrick's Day Weekend Soundtrack

Last year, I took my son to the St. Patrick's Day Parade. I saw numerous bottles of peppermint schnapps along the route, but little evidence of a proper parade. Stay home, avoid all the drunks except the one who matters, and enjoy the FlynnFiles soundtrack of St. Patrick's Day Weekend:

The Pogues--Thousands Are Sailing
Hothouse Flowers--Give It Up
Simple Minds--Belfast Child
Sinead O'Connor--This Is a Rebel Song
The Waterboys--This Is the Sea

How bout Celtic Symphony! I'll have my XM on all day with the sounds of radio Ireland.

I too hopefully will be away from the drunks :-)

Was there in Southie myself last year watching the parade. I didn't experience the drunken revelers where I was (lower Broadvay) and thought the attractions were ok. Just a traditional thang actually. But, what else should be expected?

I couldn't find the song anywhere for some reason, but here are the lyrics. I can't think of a better tribute to the Irish than this.

I swear, if I didn't know it was real, I would have assumed the "Whiskey in the Jar" Metallica cover was Wierd Al.

I have an immense amount of respect for those girls.

Oh, speaking of Irish bands, was anybody lucky or connected enough to catch U2 in Somerville the other night? I'm hearing it was pretty darn good.

What, no Celtic Women here? ;)

Got back in from seeing The Pogues, led by Shane MacGowan.

It was fantastic. They played all the best, and seeing him shuffle around (thank the good lord he is still alive although I don't know how) was priceless and worther 5 times what I paid to see it.

Sick Bed of Cuchulain is one of the best drinking songs there are and Rainy Night in Soho is one of the best love songs as well. Just a fantastic group of musicians that can still perform and put on an incredible show!

My only regret is that Caitlín O'Riordan didn't tour with them as getting to hear them sing Fairytale of New York actually in Gotham would have been the only way to improve on the concert.

Thanks for the report. Interesting that you mention Cait O'Riordan. She was supposedly slated to sing FTONY way back when. Kirsty MacColl, who did sing on FTONY, unfortunately got decapitated in a boating accident in Mexico a few years back. She wrote the song, "They Don't Know," which became a huge hit for Tracey Ullmann (with a Beatle appearing in the video). FTONY also had a star cameo (Matt Dillon as New York's Finest). Both MacColl and O'Riordan married famous men--the former producer Steve Lillywhite and the latter Elvis Costello.

Dan,

You cleared up a confusion for me. I had thought that the woman from the Pogues had died relatively recently and so didn't expect the song to be played.

However, I had not remembered that there were two women in question and was thinking only of Caitlin as being the lady from the Pogues. So then when I checked on her when I got in I found out she was still alive and had performed again with the Pogues a while back and so my misidentification was complete. Of course it was Kirsty, when you say the name it straightened my recollections out.

btw, to hear Caitlin's singing check out "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day." She could do the duet of FToNY maybe not as strikingly as Kirsty but yet just as well, I am certain.
