Saying Goodbye to Michael Jackson

Bury your invective with the dead. But don't bury your head in the sand. Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has sponsored a congressional resolution honoring Michael Jackson as a "humanitarian." A few other words come more readily to mind, like the one beginning with "p" that Rep. Peter King uttered. Michael Jackson had an amazing ability to entertain. But like so many brilliant performers, how he kept himself entertained repulsed. The best way for Jackson's fans to avoid the vitriol of Jackson's haters is to keep his life in perspective. The man could sing and dance like few others. Just leave it at that.

Yaaaaawwwwwnnnnnnnnnn!!

One great album twenty years ago does not an icon make.

I agree, though Thriller is a really great album.

I wonder what makes Jackson a humanitarian? Did he sing in "We are the World"?

He co-wrote "We Are the World." I also remember seeing some starving African children in his "Man in the Mirror" video. Either one of these accomplishments suffice to earn one the "humanitarian" label, apparently. The exclamation point after the "yawn" is a way of saying you don't really believe what you just wrote, ASDF. Six of his albums, not just Thriller, eclipsed the 10 million mark in worldwide sales. There are some huge acts that have never had one album reach 10 million in sales. Like you (I suspect), I don't own any Michael Jackson albums. But I do realize that many, many people do--and not just Thriller. If Michael Jackson isn't a pop icon, who is?

I suppose that because many thought him to be the King of Pop that is enough to be an overwhelming testimonial of his talent. But past the Thriller disc (that I still own but haven’t listened to for a very long time – vinyl you know) I don’t think he was that great and his life and death interest me not.

So my yawn stands.

Well I don't really miss him. Who the hell makes zombies dance? C'mon...

I wish I could find this but the video doesn't appear to be on youtube: http://snltranscripts.jt.org/83/83ijackson.phtml

See, as far as entertainers go, I was much more upset when Eddie Murhpy died (and will be again when he dies next Spring, and the spring after that, and the spring after that...). I guess I'll have to be content with this (NSFW!!! -- baaaaad language. You've been warned):

I find Chapelle disturbing. Too rude and crude for little old me. Maybe why I don't find him particularly funny and too dark.

In that case, why do I like Chris Rock? He just seems lighter and funnier to me.

My point was to showcase (with one exception) the black commmunity mocking MJ as the homosexual child abuser that he was.

Good riddance to pedophiles.

I understand and it was a good one. Just a general comment on the presenter. Not very relevant to the topic I guess. Mea Culpa.
