Jon & Kate Minus One

Paul Beston counts his complete ignorance of Jon and Kate as one of his "great achievements." Indeed, it is. I am proud that I have never watched their reality television show and had no idea of their identities until their names and faces splashed across every periodical in the supermarket checkout line. But my avoidance of Jon and Kate is a pedestrian accomplishment next to Mr. Beston's. I know all about the pair now. He remarkably remains in blissful ignorance. Beston writes, "The Jon and Kate story interests me only in how it illustrates the conscious effort one has to take to avoid absorbing, even unconsciously, whatever pablum the ubiquitous media machinery chooses to shovel out." The Pixelated Technicolor Zombie wants your mind. Paul Beston isn't going down without a fight.

Who?

In fact, I don't even know who this Paul Beston is. Something tells me I'll learn about all these folks through simple osmosis over the next few days. I hope not. Either way, I won't click the links in the meantime.

Until a couple of weeks ago, I had no clue who these people were. I hadn’t even heard the names when my boss mentioned in passing that he was watching the show. I still had no idea specifically who or what they were until I joined a fitness club and, while running on the treadmill next to people of the female persuasion who happened to be watching the usual chickified ‘magazine’ shows, caught wind of some of foolishness that is part of the reality genre.

My response in thought? Who gives a fat rat’s a$$.

Now that I can no longer get an ana1og signal (given where my rabbit ears and TV are located -- not to mention my rural location), I am in no danger of ever accidentally watching this show.

Homer, you are now safe from the plethora of $hit that's on TV. Unfortunately, it took government making a decision to take something else away to do it.

Actually, I didn't even notice. I heard about problems other people were having via some article on Drudge, I think. I watch movies from Netflix but that's about all I use the TV for.
