How dead is the album? The bestselling album of the last decade was by a band that broke up forty years ago. Of the world's 25 bestselling albums of the decade, just two--Nickleback's All the Right Reasons and Amy Whinehouse's Back to Black--were released in the decade's second half. It's the end of the decade that has no name, which means it's time to name the ten best albums from the ten years that have no name. I'm giving those ten years a name: the decade that killed the album. And I'm naming my top ten albums from the decade that killed the album:
10. Jack Johnson & Friends--Sing-a-Longs and Lullabyes for the Film Curious George Bestseller on this list.
9. The National--Boxer (2007) The last voice I heard that deep was singing about Superman and Solomon Grundy.
8. Arcade Fire--Funeral (2004) "Children: Wake up!"
7. Kings of Leon--Because the Times (2007) "Lynyrd Strokes" is supposed to be an insult?
6. The Killers--Sam's Town (2006) Critics love the first album best; the second album is often better.
5. Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs--Show Your Bones (2006) Ditto.
4. The Strokes--This Is It (2001) Do believe the hype.
3. Wilco--Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002) You had me at "I am an American aquarium drinker."
2. Ryan Adams--Gold (2001) It's a little bit country; a little bit rock n roll.
1. Pete Yorn--Musicforthemorningafter (2001) All killer, no filler.
Don't player hate. Player participate. Name your favorite album(s) from the past ten years in the comments section. Do it now, because ten years from now such a list might be obsolete.
To exclude Radiohead is a little too low brow for me (all you old men out there should ge over the antedeluvian "early Radiohead" flatearther meme, and enter the 22nd century already!).
Call me a critic, but The Killers' debute is _much_ better than their follow-up.
Rock-n-Roll is golden, Gold is silver.
Overrated Arcade Fire doesn't rate being on the list at all, but I'm down with Yorn's MFTMA as #1.
Thus Spake Xantippe. Let it be so!
Cool list. Strokes def. Love the mftma yorn #1 nod. That record is unreal. Every song....so many styles represented flawlessly. More people should know about that record.
Not a single Bluegrass album...

I think Only by the Night is superior to Because the Times.
Band of Horses' Everything All the Time is pretty darn good.
Finally, I'd like to nominate Minus the Bear's Highly Refined Pirates.
Hmm... My favorite albums of the twenty-naughts... I'm probably going to get mocked for these, but what the hey.
"A Girl Called Eddy" by A Girl Called Eddy
"Break the Silence" by Alana Grace
"White Lilies Island" by Natalie Imbruglia
"Trance Party Vol. 4" by various artists
"Doll Revolution" by the Bangles
One more: Weezer's Make Believe, easily their second best album after the 'Blue Album.'
I so enjoyed the music of the aughts, I just can't wait to hear what the tens bring. Probably back to some kind of techno disco blather.
I'll be listening to Zep., thank you.
Must mean I'm getting old.
Neither OK Computer nor Kid A made the list?
You can get old and still keep your ears open. I enjoy a good playing of "I Can't Quit You Baby" as much the next guy, but there are also some great bands out there now.
Nice to see your pick from the oft missed first Zep album.
I have to agree. I have been resistent to actually spending much time listening to the newer stuff. Although, the snippets of music provided here by the best songs of 2009 did not blow my skirt up.
Maybe I said the same thing about "I Can't Quit You Babe" the first time I heard that? Nah.
Here's to hoping I can open my mind up this coming 2010 and get interested enough in more current musical fare.
10)Spoon--Kill The Moonlight (2002)
9)Daft Punk--Discovery (2001)
8)Ryan Adams--Heartbreaker (2000)
7)Wilco--Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
6)Flaming Lips--Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)
5)Boards of Canada--Geogaddi (2002)
4)Godspeed You! Black Emperor--Yanqui UXO (2002)
3)Interpol--Turn On The Bright Lights (2002)
2)Isis--Oceanic (2002)
1)Duh!...Radiohead--Kid A (2000)
The latter half of 2000 was terrible for music.
Yeah, I liked that Strokes album also. Feel like music as a whole went downhill over this decade. But people are always talking about the death of rock, I guess. Check out Muse sometime. They are great. Check out their song "Absolution."
The Killers 2006 album was as close to perfection,as I have heard since the 90's.
The wild thing about it is the wide range of ages, music tastes, regions, etc. seem to really shake their groove thing when one of the Killers cuts is played in most retail outlets.
A co-worker of mine is in his early 60's, I am always riding him about being a left over loser from the 60's (all in good fun) who has been more into Hendrix,Doors (which is pretty tough to beat) and the rest of the late 60's groups, Even this guy loves the killers.
Always fun to get in a needle on him about the real perfection from the 60's is actually many of the Motown groups, which are my favorites.
Anyway Mr.Flynn, a very nice list and Happy 2010 to all!
Highly Refined Pirates by Minus the Bear
Ben suggested Radiohead's OK Computer, but that album was released in 1997. It should definitely be on a list of best albums of the '90s though. Kid A was released in 2000, but I wouldn't put it on this list. It's not as good as In Rainbows (2007), which should be on the list, or OK Computer, for that matter.
Make fun if you like, but I would add just about any of Coldplay's albums. I also agree with The Strokes' Is This It.
If you like rap (which I mostly don't), I think you have to include Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (2000).
Also, people should check out Jay Z's MTV Unplugged (2001) album with the Roots providing all the music.
