It's been thirty years since Elvis left the building for good. For all the Elvis haters out there, ask yourselves a few questions: What other talent could, thirty years after death, inspire the massive pilgrimage going on in Memphis? Who, before Elvis, needed just one name? Who else stayed home but still made dough by sending his car and clothes on tour? The most talented singer the world has ever known is dead (yes, he is dead, and so is Tupac), but his songs live forever. Here's a few of my favorites:
Suspicious Minds
Jailhouse Rock
I Can't Help Falling in Love
Always on My Mind
Hound Dog
American Trilogy

BTW, saw him in K-Mart on Monday.

to answer your first question, Dylan.
You could say Lincoln too, but he never had a top 10.
I was never a huge fan but always liked "Lonesome Tonight". Great vibe.
I recently read Goldman's bio of Elvis. Less than flattering overall. For anyone else who has read it, do you think that book was a fair portrayal?
"Who, before Elvis, needed just one name?"
Beethoven, Bach, Basie come to mind. No rock guys that I can think of. Probably partly due to the fact that Elvis is an unusual name in and of itself. Unusual guy as well
Finbar,
I know he looks like it sometimes, but Dylan
hasn't been dead for the past thirty years.
(I get your point though.)
My birthday is today, and Elvis died on my first birthday. My grandmother tells me every year about how sad that day was but that my family had the joy of a one year old baby to help mitigate the sorrow. Knowing my family I bet that was an odd first birthday party.
Actually, anyone born on Aug. 16th can arguably make the claim to share a significant date w/ the three most significant figures in American popular culture. Both Elvis and Babe Ruth died on 8/16, and Madonna was born on 8/16. Strange, all three of these are easily known by their first names, I guess it is a sign of the highest pop culture status.
Tell me about it, Bruce. I'm a fellow August 16-er. Happy Birthday to both of us.
Dylan? You mean Robert Zimmerman? Outside of the fact that he sucks, he shouldn't even be mentioned in a post about the King.
Oh come on ASDF, give ol’ Bobby his due. He has always sucked as a vocalist but he's a great songwriter and lyricist.
Has anyone ever heard Frank Zappa’s parody of Dylan in “Flakes”? Choice stuff.
Yes, he has written some good songs. But, the only one I liked that he himself performed was 'Tangled Up In Blue'. 'Like a Rolling Stone' was tolerable but I could put a gun in my mouth and threaten to pull the trigger when I hear 'Everybody Must Get Stoned' and that goes for most of his other crap.
I feel the same way whenever I hear "Sympathy for The Devil".
Funny you mention that because as time goes on, the less I like the Stones. There are some standards that will never get old (especially from the Stickey Fingers lp) but I find myself avoiding a lot of their stuff that I used to enjoy.
The Byrds did Dylan way better than Dylan ever could.
I made a blog entry containing some personal memories and a couple of videos. You can read it at the link below

Musically speaking, try this one on.....
