A new film projects a director's fantasy of George W. Bush assassinated onto the silver screen. It's not like people imitate what they see, right? No one repeats lines from Caddyshack. No one bought the sunglasses they saw Tom Cruise wear in Risky Business. No woman asked the hairdresser to cut her hair like Jennifer Anniston's after watching Friends. No man went without an undershirt after seeing It Happened One Night. And it's not like people kill presidents, right? Assassins murdered four of George W. Bush's predecessors, and made serious attempts, by my count, on the lives of five other presidents (former, current, and future). The rules of good taste and decency change when the occupant of the White House has an (R) next to his name. Bill Clinton got The American President, Dave, and other schlock. George W. Bush gets Death of a President.
Your point is? *heavy sarcasm*
An attempt was also made on Bush's life. I can't remember what country he was in, but it was outside the USA. Somebody chucked a grenade at him. It was a dud, however.
It was in Georgia. A Jimmy Carter supporter tossed it at him. ;-) No, really it was Georgia in the former Soviet Union.
The was in Georgia, Ben-T. And I'm sure there are pleanty of other attempts on his life that we haven't heard about.
It's sad that someone would make such a film using a real sitting president. But it is a British film, and remember this president is HATED around the world, especially in Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.
Hes hated in the United States.
The hatred from the left and right in the US is nothing compared to the scorn he gets from foriegners.
This guy can't travel in Europe without millitary escort.
Isn't it always the case that when people make a stand and do something radical they believe is right, they are hated for it? Bill Clinton was loved because he sat on the fence and tried to please everyone, while getting nothing done when it comes to national security.
George W. Bush is not popular today in many circles, but neither was Lincoln. I'm not comparing these two, but Bush's legacy will go down as someone who had vision for the middle-east. We are in a battle against radical islam and Iran is the real source. The sooner we confront this monster of a regime, the sooner the tide turns.
Bush needs to give a Reaganesque speech to the people of Iran to rise up against their oppressors, like Reagan gave to the people of the USSR in the 1980s. The question is, does Bush have enough cahonies to do it?
Christopher,
You’re right; Bush is long overdue in delivering that powerful,
Reagan-esque speech . I personally doubt he will, though. He just seems reluctant to communicate with the public in a powerful manner. Having said that, I’m not concerned about what the perception is of the United States overseas. If the European countries were dealing effectively with the radical Muslims, then I would take their criticism of us a little more seriously. Until they do, I couldn’t care less what the Europeans think of us.
I’m curious, is there any world leader that travels without armed protection?
I don't want anyone to think I'm picking solely on the Europeans. The same goes for the Asians, Africans, Middle Easterners etc. I don't want to leave anyone out.
I am not a big fan of Bush, however when people talk about how hated he is in Europe I take that as a badge of honor and I tend to like him more.
The following is a quote from a citizen of our closest ally in the world:
"You will never, ever be able to overestimate the degree to which the British people loathe George Bush," Liddle said. "It will be a free round of drinks in every pub for the person who plays the assassin."
You may call the film and the comment tasteless, and you may be right. But doesn't this kind of sentiment make America less safe- not more so?
Bush is leading this country into a ditch.
The worst President ever.
Period.
So why should I care about what the average citizen in the UK thinks about Bush? Why do they loathe him? If they loathe Bush, they must loathe Tony Blair as well...my guess is that they don't loathe Blair, and they are trying to find a scape goat to blame their terrorism problems on...Bush seems to be an easy person to blame for the liberals, the victims of Katrina, and pretty much every other problem in the world, so let's continue the theme...Bush is responsible for all of the world's ill!
Stupid UK citizens...I don't care about...whether my President is protecting me from Islamo-facists, I do care. Clap clap clap Bush...you're doing what I want you do. Now continue to appoint pro-life justices, cut some useless welfare programs, and i'll be happy.

It was typically buried in todays WaPo.
Bush haters, don't bother; you won't get it anyway.
