Spin Magazine has released its list of the 20 best albums of the last 20 years. Tops are Radiohead's OK Computer, Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back, and Nirvana's Nevermind. Coincidentally, FlynnFiles has also--just this very moment--released its own list of the best albums of the last 20 years. The FlynnFiles list lords over the Spin list. Bow to FlynnFiles, Spin. I invite readers to buy the albums on my list through the links, and to create their own lists in the comments section. Here is my list, with a few words on each selection (I reserve the right to alter my list for any reason at any time.).
20. Ryan Adams Rock n Roll
Confuse with Brian Adams at own risk.
19. Tom Petty Full Moon Fever
TP's first solo effort holds up well over time.
18. Paul Simon Graceland
Comeback album replaces Garfunkel with tribal drums and African singers.
17. Nirvana Nevermind
Killed metal, made it uncool for rock stars to be rock stars, and launched a style of music, not all of it good.
16. Radiohead The Bends
This one came out before they lost me with their fascination with robots and machines.
15. The Travelling Wilburys Vol. 1
Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr. spawned some talented progeny.
14. Wilco Being There
I'm supposed to like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot better. But I don't.
13. Tori Amos Little Earthquakes
Beavis once told Butthead that he feared Tori Amos cutting off his weener. He's not alone.
12. Buffalo Tom Sleepy Eyed
'Sunday Night' rocks like no song rocks. BT is the ultimate garage band.
11. The Lemonheads Come on Feel the Lemonheads
Power pop=fun.
10. Wilco Summerteeth
'Shot in the Arm' is very rock n roll.
9. Pixies Doolittle
Who else sings about space aliens and killing sprees?
8. Dinosaur Jr. Where You Been
J. Mascis sings and plays guitar like he comes from another planet.
7. REM Green
REM ceases to be a college-radio band.
6. U2 Achtung Baby
U2 reinvents itself a second time.
5. Belly King
Awesome drumming.
4. U2 The Joshua Tree
A rock album with two number ones.
3. Buffalo Tom Let Me Come Over
The best album you've never heard.
2. Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction
If the Incredible Hulk took lots of cocaine and made a rock album, this is what it would sound like.
1. Pete Yorn Musicforthemorningafter
Perfect.
I would add Tom Waits Mule Variations, Jesus and Mary Chain Stoned and Dethroned, and George Harrison's Brainwashed. I would subtract Tori Amos(what about Alanis Morrisette?)and Ryan Adams Rock and Roll as I prefer demolition.
Also what about Pearl Jam 10 or Versus? Surely over Belly.
The Stone Roses self titled release (1989)should be in the top 8. Graceland? Give us all a break...you can't slip this in to try and make sure most musical genres are in your top 20. Graceland is not disserving of a top 20 spot. Replacing it should be Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream (1993).
"Time Out of Mind" - Lanois and Bob both at their very best - murky and humid like the New Orleans climate in which it was created. Playing the album makes the air in the room thicker.
Squeaking in at exactly 20 years should be "The Head on the Door" by the Cure.
Unfortunately, Van Halen's 1984 (for obvious reasons) and Speaking in Tongues by the Talking Heads can't be included. But would be 1 and 2 respectively on my list of top albums of the last 22 years.
Why didn't you include Maximum Black Crowes? What a joke your list is without the Crowes!
Time Out of Mind should make any list I agree. Belly? WTF. Pete Yawn? Keith Richards Main offender should be there too.
What about the coldplay album with clocks, the scientist and the 8 other songs that were good radio songs ?
What about Quiet Riot? I used to blast that album back on Webster Street. "Come on feel the noise, Girls rock your boys, We'll get wild wild wild" I always dedicated it to the Flynn Brothers.
Pearl Jam's TEN -- Incredible work of music
What about "Exile on Louis Ave" by The Kendall's? The songs "tree bark brandy" and "Comfortably noxious" are both pretty magical.
"Come on Feel the Lemonheads" isn't even the best Lemonheads album.

Good list. Several of those were considered for my 20, including Jeff Buckley and Smashing Pumpkins.
It is still not too late...as your list s&*&s a**.
It is good to see Tom Petty on the list. I saw him this past week at Great Woods and he was excellent.Mike Cambell is a great guitarist and he played a Wilbury tune. The highlights were Don't come around here... Listen to her heart and a new song called Melinda, which seemed like a Johnny Cash tune. Another new song was played and 19,000 people elected to get a $7.50 beer at that point. Petty is the most under rated hall of fame rocker out there. And the most affordable at $40 a ticket.
Wilco two albums in the top 200 albums of the past 20 years maybe? Two in the top 20? Are you on crack?
Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime would have to go on my list--if I cared enough to make one.
Thanks to whoever posted a vote for the crowes for me! How can you leave them off the list all together? As Jackie Childs would say, OUTRAGEOUS!!! Your list is horrible daniel and not just because you left off my boys! Pete Yorn #1, come on u dont even believe that!
I thought about the Crows, Maury--the Counting Crows.
But don't player hate. Player participate. Let's see your list, even an abreviated top five list.
i need a few to think about it. it the post is still up after softball tonight I will answer that question. hopefully you see my post? Counting Crowes?? when did u BOBBIT yourself?
