Best Movies of 2004

The universe of films I saw in 2004 was too small, so this is more like my favorite movies of the year rather than the best movies of the year. The links bring you to my take on each picture. Here's my list.

3. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
2. The Village
1. The Passion of the Christ

Don't player hate. Player participate. Let's see your list of 2004's best cinematic offerings in the comments section below.

I think Kill Bill Vol 2 needs to be counted as one of the best of the year, even if it is in some ways not as funny as 2003's Vol 1.

8. The Terminal
7. Garden State
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5. Spanglish
4. The Village
3. Kill Bill, Vol. 2
2. Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
1. The Passion

There are many movies I have not yet seen and I think have the potential to win places on my list: I Am David, Sideways, Being Julia, The Aviator, and Troy.

Note to Short: Vol. 2 far surpassed Vol. 1 as far as quality, and deep down you know this. Vol. 2 was actually so great that it deepened the meaning and significance of Vol. 1.

Favorite films (which probably means they're not the best) of 2004:
5. Kill Bill Vol. 2
4. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
3. Spider-man 2
2. Collateral
1. Ray

Some of the worst films of 2004:
5. I, Robot
4. GODSEND
3. Along Came Polly
2. The Day After Tomorrow
1. White Chicks

Honorable mention goes to
1) The Passion of the Christ, an extraordinary film that defied convention and transcended Hollywood formula to become art.
2) The Polar Express (Imax version)

I wish "The Life of David Gale" came out in 2004 just so I could add it to my worst films list, but instead I'll just have to add that it competes for the title of worst-movie-I-have-ever-seen.

I saw almost nothing . . .

But The Village was a miserable pile. I will never pay to see another one of MNS's onanistic films again.

Donnie Darko Director's Cut should definitely get mentioned, the original theatrical release of the movie was several years ago but this rerelease and revamped director's cut was the best rerelease since Apocalypse Now Redux and makes the film one of my 25 favorites of all time.
