Some People Never Learn

Here's what I wrote almost a year ago upon President Obama signing the so-called stimulus package: "Barack Obama has signed his misnamed stimulus package. The $787 billion bill is actually a depressant package. It doesn't create wealth, it merely redistributes it. The wealth it takes comes mostly from wealth producers. The wealth it distributes goes in large part to the un- and underemployed. In other words, it rewards the problem and hampers the solution. The package is more sedative than stimulus." The American economy lost 85,000 jobs in December. The December bad news puts an exclamation point on a year filled with bad news. The AP's Christopher Rugabear writes: "Employers cut 4.2 million jobs in 2009, and the unemployment rate averaged 9.3 percent. That's compared with an average of 5.8 percent in 2008 and 4.6 percent in 2007. Nearly 15.3 million people are unemployed, an increase of 3.9 million during 2009." The stimulus package failed to create jobs. It killed jobs, for the reasons I predicted in February. Barack Obama's weasel language, "jobs saved or created," was a signal that even the administration didn't believe, economically not politically speaking, in the plan. Now after all the damage the redistributionists have done to the economy, they want another stimulus package.

They are very simply insane. And likely hoping to manufacture more crisis so that they can continue to pose as the solution.

Saul Alinsky, please pick up.

The stimulus was ineffective because it functioned as pork, strengthening the state-corporate nexus.

What is the argument you are using to construct a causal relationship between the stimulus and job losses? Is it simply that jobs were lost after the stimulus passed, or is there actually substance and reason that you're using to make that claim?

Posted by: PMA on January 8, 2010 04:29 PM

The money spent by the feds has to come from somewhere. What's spent by the feds isn't being spent by whoever else would otherwise have. And public employees seem to be doing better than ever. Hmm...

"What is the argument you are using to construct a causal relationship between the stimulus and job losses?"

As Mr. Flynn says here, the alleged "Stimulus" package was just a big wealth redistribution mechanism with some of the money coming from the ever over-taxed "rich". The rest coming from people around the planet who really don't care to lend to us anymore because we are a bad risk.

Over one third of the "Stimulus" has and will go into propping up public sector jobs. Much will go into concerns that go along and play along with the Democrat power base as will a large percentage that will be allocated for stealth reparations.

In terms of the casual relationship between stimulus and jobs, the private sector, which would provide much more natural economic stimulus if government were to just leave it alone, is scared $hiteless of Obama and his henchmen. He and they have proven that they not only have contempt for America but also have contempt for what gave America the strength it once had and may never have again.

Contrary to your "state-corporate nexus' rap, over 80% of private business in this country is small business. Many with 100 or less employees. Few of these (unless minority owned) will get any kind of stimulus so they lay off or dissolve.

I believe that Rahm Emmanuel's manufactured "Crisis" is working just fine to get Capitalism out of the way to clear the path for more government intervention and eventual takeover.

You mean BoA, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, KBR, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, the Carlyle Group, AIG, Warren Buffet, Raytheon, AHIP, PHRMA, the American Medical Association, and Walmart are scared $hitless of Obama and his henchmen? Where are you getting your information, or, perhaps more appropriately, what drugs are you using recreationally while you post these comments?

Alan wrote,

What are you talking about? What taxes were raised to pay for the stimulus?

The stimulus will be paid for using the government's preferred method of taxation, deficit spending funded by inflation, which is the most regressive tax there is. After all, we've gotta keep subsidizing the private health cartel and flushing trillions down the war profiteer's rathole and bankster's toilet, and we're sure as hell not doing that by taxing the rich (ie small business owners and other wealthy elites, the top 2%).

Small business was not taxed to pay for the stimulus. The government doesn't pay for its programs, it prints more money. I thought you conservatives were hip to that game. You were pros at it for the majority of the Bush regime.

Posted by: PMA on January 9, 2010 03:34 PM

*sorry, I should have typed the Federal Reserve, a private tyranny, prints more money and loans it to the government thus enriching itself or the government acquires foreign loans to pay for its programs.

"The central bank is an institution of the most deadly hostility existing against the Principles and form of our Constitution. I am an Enemy to all banks discounting bills or notes for anything but Coin. If the American People allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations (that conservatives love with all their hearts) that will grow up around them will deprive the People of all their Property until their Children will wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered."

Considering that all of those big businesses that you listed have either been provided with some kind of bailout and are now worried about being beholden to Big Government, a government run by a bunch of Chicago thugs and left wing ideologues who believe in government control and don't necessarily believe that Capitalism is the way, I would expect that even they are in fact worried and it's certain that they have been pulling back through layoffs and deferred capital expenditure.

If you question that, pick up a WSJ sometime.

My bigger point is that most of those privately employed in this country are not provided for by those you've mentioned but by smaller companies. And the majority of those types of companies have been and will be whacked by this Administration's onerous new taxes AND, if it becomes final law, the costs of helping to force government RATIONED healthcare down people's throats. And those companies will not benefit from Government's understanding and potential bailouts and will either go out of business or trim down and cease to invest in growing business.

You won't get it while you rail about the "state-corporate nexus" but the math is ultimately simple - you can't expect overwhelming revenue from either no business or businesses that are under the strain of the government yoke.

And by my calculations we have at least three years or, God help us, longer before things ever get better.

It still boggles the mind though how you are less concerned with a government that forces it's will through takeovers and controls than you are with a bunch of businesses that can't make policy, can't force anybody to buy their products and are simply attempting to operate under some kind of charter.

Amazin'.

"Small business was not taxed to pay for the stimulus. The government doesn't pay for its programs, it prints more money."

Do you think that this government can triple deficit spending in one year and slap us with NHC without taxes going up? Are you kidding? Right off the bat, the G.W. tax cuts are suspended. That's a tax increase to you Mortimer.

There are seven new taxes alone on every working person is this country just to support that boondoggle of all boondoggles, NHC!!

And they've printed a trillion dollars of monopoly money already with more to come but the way the Corruptocrats have and are spending it will take more borrowing, more printing and more taxation.

I mean, Americans are going to have to pay dearly for enjoying the highest standard of living in the world for all of those years, aren't they?

Least ways, that's the way the global Marxist and his crew in the White House look at it.

This guy Obama, has continually used Marixt language and the goofballs in the MSM,still don't understand. Terms like social justice and a "heaven on earth" are terms that justified the murder of at least 100 million deaths, still Obama bristling with the confidence of a young child, who has never let go of his mother's coat sleeve. This young child in a man's body has no clue that it's the individual not government that makes capitalism, the most effective economic system the world has known.
Then again, how in the hell would little boy Obama know, when he has spent the first 46 years of his life avoiding the real world.

The guy is a joke, similar to his hero's, Billy Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, who are still defending Stalin, Che,Mao,and Castro.

Obama is in so far over his head, that even I almost feel sorry for him, until I think about my
son and his friends.

These are the tax cuts that are set to expire in the future, according to Heritage, a conservative foundation (heritage.org).

Child Credit: This credit will shrink from $700 to $500 per child on January 1, 2011.

The Income Tax: Rates will increase between 3 and 4.5 percentage points in each bracket on January 1, 2011.

The 10 Percent Bracket: The bracket will be eliminated on January 1, 2011, raising the income tax burden of many workers by 5 percentage points.

The 15 Percent Bracket for Joint Filers: On January 1, 2011, the upper limit of this bracket will shrink from 200 to 167 percent of the upper limit of the 15 percent bracket for single filers, creating a marriage penalty.

Standard Deduction for Joint Filers: On January 1, 2011, this will shrink from 200 to 167 percent of the standard deduction for single filers, creating a marriage penalty.

The Estate Tax: The top rate for this tax will increase to 60 percent on January 1, 2011, and the value of an estate exempt from taxation will shrink to $1 million, which is less than it is today.

Since Obama was inaugurated in mid-January, there have been a total of ZERO tax increases (two tax benefits expired on Jan. 1, 2009, Bush's watch). The Obama team has also stated that it will not raise taxes until there is job recovery. So this crap,

"Right off the bat, the G.W. tax cuts are suspended. That's a tax increase to you Mortimer."

is completely untrue. If anything, they will (Obushma and the Committee To Screw The World) continue to serve the interests of Wall Street and financial elites at the expense of the common good. Our founding fathers spoke of the common good frequently, and would no doubt be labeled Marxist or com'niss' by conservative idiots with no historical perspective and very few facts.

As examples

"Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it."
-John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776

"All the property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition.:(WHAT AN EVIL MARXIST OMFUKG!)
-Benjamin Franklin, letter to Robert Morris, December 25, 1783

"Whether property alone, and the whole of what each citizen possesses, shall be subject to contribution, or only its surplus after satisfying his first wants, or whether the faculties of body and mind shall contribute also from their annual earnings, is a question to be decided."(OMG SOCIALIST KILL JEFFERSON)
-Thomas Jefferson, The Jefferson Cyclopedia, page 852 section 8279

"I have no other view than to promote the public good, and am unambitious of honors not founded in the approbation of my Country."
-George Washington

Can you imagine the conniption fits streaming forth from the imbecilic conservatives if they heard these wise words from the founders today?

Posted by: PMA on January 11, 2010 10:16 PM

“Since Obama was inaugurated in mid-January, there have been a total of ZERO tax increases”

You are absolutely correct. Howevagh, Obama's budget proposes $989 billion in new taxes over the course of the next 10 years, starting fiscal year 2011, most of which are tax increases on individuals.

Like on those making more than $250,000 (which has already evaporated as a campaign ploy) will go like this:

$338 billion - Bush tax cuts expire
$179 billlion - eliminate itemized deduction
$118 billion - capital gains tax hike

For a total of $636 billion over 10 years

And in that nasty old Capitalist Pig private sector and businesses:

$17 billion - Reinstate Superfund taxes
$24 billion - tax carried-interest as income
$5 billion - codify "economic substance doctrine"
$61 billion - repeal LIFO
$210 billion - international enforcement, reform deferral, other tax reform
$4 billion - information reporting for rental payments
$5.3 billion - excise tax on Gulf of Mexico oil and gas
$3.4 billion - repeal expensing of tangible drilling costs
$62 million - repeal deduction for tertiary injectants
$49 million - repeal passive loss exception for working interests in oil and natural gas properties
$13 billion - repeal manufacturing tax deduction for oil and natural gas companies
$1 billion - increase to 7 years geological and geophysical amortization period for independent producers
$882 million - eliminate advanced earned income tax credit

For a total of $353 billion over 10 years

(as a side note, you've got to love the ones further restricting our domesitic energy industry)

As far as John Adams is concerned, I’d be all for government staying out of the business of business. But, again, government involvement in business is not the province of those, so-called, idiot Conservatives. In fact all of your enlightening Founding Father quotes are essentially saying the same things: Government out of the way of trampling on the rights of the private citizen and as an extension, private business.

With your support of Government intervention and takeover of Healthcare, to use one example, you obviously do not believe in that.

I'm for whatever public mechanism is necessary to dismantle the health cartel and provide care to each and every precious human being, which is an indisputable modal right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Senior citizens receive universal single-payer care now, it's called Medicare. Whether health should be regulated like a utility or whether that care should be provided through public mechanisms is secondary to the imperative that health care (like education, food, shelter, clothing) be provided to every human being.

Posted by: PMA on January 12, 2010 11:56 AM

Yeah. That's because you are nutz.

Posted by: asdf on January 12, 2010 01:34 PM

You know, it's interesting...

If if weren't for the long war on Religion, and gradual coarsening of the culture, we'd probably have more nuns and religious. And if we did, we'd probably have more hospitals run by those folks (like we used to). And so, while you couldn't get an abortion or mutilate your body in some fashionable way, you'd have doctors and nurses that really cared about you, and your soul. When's the last time you got that?

Posted by: Homer J. Fong on January 12, 2010 04:31 PM

Homer,

You are correct. It would be better if the Rick Warrens and Mark Sanfords of the world were more interested in providing care for the sick than they are in "getting that money and $@#*&?! those &*@$%^!es". Alas, conservative Christianity is guided by money changers and fornicators. If only we had Christ on earth to bring out the whip and overturn their money tables.

And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Luke 19:45-46, KJV

Doctors used to make house calls and did not consider themselves, as Simon Wiesenthal put it, "Gods in White".

For better and worse, we live in vastly different times, but only the wretched ethically egoistic conservatives think everything's A-OK as the bloodthirsty, sadistic health cartel feeds at the taxpayer subsidized trough of pain and profit.
