'You Disgust Me'

Did you ever see Howard Beale's "I'm as mad as hell" oration in Network? Actor Peter Finch died about a month after the movie's release, but his character's spirit has reincarnated in this citizen editorialist's "You Disgust Me" video assaulting the 160 percent rise in federal cigarette taxes. It's entrancing. The gentleman obviously owes a debt to Beale's style, but not his substance. Notice how Mr. Youdigustme tells his audience to leave him alone, while Mr. Madashell tells his audience that he is not going to leave them alone.

I don't smoke, never have. Disgusting habit whether it be cigarettes, pipes or (sorry Dan) cigars. I do however drink bourbon. I will gladly pay a sin tax for something I enjoy. Smokers enjoy their smoke product, oh they will complain that they are addicts, not my fault. Tax my bourbon, fine I will pay it. Smokers need to stop whinning. If they are poor then all the more incentive to quit.

Why?

It's a tax on the poor, plain and simple. Further, it's an illustration of how holding power over how you spend your money is equivalent to holding your freedom hostage. Why so many don't see the link between your wealth and your freedom is beyond me....

Why will I willingly pay a tax on something that I enjoy? Because Bourbon is something that is not a nessecity. Nessecities should not be taxed, but items that we purchase that are not needed for life can be.

Freedom does not equal a lack of taxes. To have a free society somethings need to be sacrificed. Sometimes that is a little money.

$35 bottle of Basil Haydens with a 6% tax equals $37.10 and Mike with a good buzz. Besides I can afford a little tax like that for something I enjoy. But tax the hell out of cigarettes since those poor people who smoke them are going to use government health care system to pay for their illness.

Not that we don't already know, but it should not be a surprise that the guy, who when campaigning, said that ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY no taxes would be raised on people making less the $250k (wink wink) adds an onerous regressive tax to a product that will mostly effect those in the lower economic segments of the population while sneaking butts in the White House like a 12 year old.
