We Are Not Alone

It has often seemed as if conservatives were dead the last eight years. Three moments during Bush the Younger's reign of error demonstrate that conservatives weren't dead, only sleeping. Ocassionally, the alarm bell sounded and conservatives on Capitol Hill woke up. The first was the populist uproar that derailed the Bush-McCain-Kennedy amnesty for illegal aliens; the second, the unity that defeated the Harriet Miers nomination to the Supreme Court and resulted in Justice Samuel Alito. The third, I hope, is the killing the $700 billion bank bailout by House Republicans. In each instance, a liberal outcome seemed a fait accompli. Yet, in each instance, conservatives roared and Republicans, who had rolled over on No Child Left Behind, the prescription drug giveaway, and so many other big-government Bush boondoggles, heard the message. After eight years of alienation, it's nice to again be reminded that we are not alone.

What I found heartening was that there are a number of reps who do seem to get it at the philosophical and moral level yes, but also constitutionally and in a republican (small "r") sense.

Oh, and by the way, because our auto industry cannot make cars good enough to complete in the marketplace, we just threw a piddly $25 billion at the big three for another pseudo bail out.

When you’re talking about $700 billion, I guess we miss a little number like $25 BILLION and also that our Congress has passed a crappy token energy bill and the chance that we’ll probably be paying $5.00 a gallon by January.

But hey, we’ve got to make sure Congress saves face and that the big Corps and businesses are saved. All for our good of course with no guarantee that we won’t be throwing another 100 billion at another problem next month.

I think these are more populist issues than conservative. Harriet Myers pretty much sunk herself after everyone realized she was a complete lightweight.

Most Americans, not just conservatives, were against amnesty. And many liberals, Kucinich, Kaptur etc. were also against the bailout.

If they had been asleep, the economy would not be on the verge now of another depression. Some Rs may acknowledge a hand in the deregulation spasm that brought it on.

Evidently, the elite pols were right that we little people didn't understand the complexities of the bail out because I didn't realize that NASCAR, wool research, rum producers, salmon fisheries, etc., were part of the mortg@ge/bank/business liquidity problems.
