George W. Bush was the first to preside over a $2 trillion budget. Now he's the first president to propose a $3 trillion budget. To put this in perspective, the size of Bush's budget is roughly the size of Germany's gross domestic product. It swallows almost a quarter of the U.S. economy for the never satiated federal government. Yet, for its restraint, some Democrats call the budget "dead on arrival." The San Jose Mercury News editorializes that "Bush's Budget Takes Money Away from Health Care." Ms. magazine notes "broad cuts from many vital domestic programs." The St. Petersburg Times editorializes, "Bush shows his contempt for entitlements and other domestic programs such as environmental protection and veterans care with his spending cuts." One wishes all of this were true. If George W. Bush were as frugal when it comes to spending as his critics imagine, then he might have made a pretty good president.
From my post, "The 3 Trillion Dollar Man":
George W. Bush was supposed to revert back to his “true self,” they said, now that liberal Democrats have taken back control of Congress (in large part because, in terms of spending at least, Bush and his GOP friends in Congress had governed to the left of the Democrats over the first six years of his presidency). “They” - conservative pundits, that is - said he would prove more conservative over the last two years of his presidency...
Nevertheless, for anyone left with any doubt, Bush has now finally and incontrovertibly revealed his ”true self.” ... Bush is indeed a “conservative” - conserving a 70 year American legacy of ever expanding and intrusively centralized government, on an ever-widening road straight to Leviathan.
Limited Government is over rated. Got to give those new illegal guest workers what they want.
As with all great empires throughout our history; the meek shall inherit the earth..... but who are the meek this time around? who can claim they are on morally higher ground than us??!!
The CHINESE? I don't think so.
What the hell are you talking about, man?
sorry... was quite drunk when I posted. Just ignore it.
Hey, we'll have no PWI allowed here.
It won't be too soon for me until the term 'Compassionate Conservative' is eradicated from the lexicon.
This exploding budget business is a direct result of who Bush told us he would be.
I suppose it serves us right that Bush begat McNasty who is less compassionate and more of a 'Fu$k You' moderate Democrat. This is the problem when we vote lesser of two evils.
For the next four years, I don't see a budget that's in control.
A compassionate conservative is one who supports limited government while he gives generously to charity. Compelling taxpayers to support his charities is presidential overreach, and it supports that most inefficient of charities, the government.
