Mitt Romney won Michigan decisively, making Republicans nationally more indecisive. There is no national frontrunner, just a series of regional candidates. This will play havoc on Super Tuesday, the day that was supposed to give the parties their nominees. With three candidates winning in the first four contests, Fred Thompson strangely getting a late bounce, and Rudy Giuliani waiting for the big states, the prospect of a party without a nominee after the primary season is real. How might a brokered convention go down? Jay Cost and Peter Baker give the 411. Perhaps even more interesting than a floor fight over the nomination is a floor fight over the nomination that involves people who opted not to run for president. If Rudy, or Mitt, or McCain can't get half of the delegates, then doesn't it say something negative about their candidacies? Why wouldn't a Newt Gingrich, a Dick Cheney, a Condi Rice, or some other 11th-hour candidate capitalize on the chaos in St. Paul?
Don't you wish Ron Paul had the presentation skills of Ronald Reagan?
We've got a bunch of front runners who can connect with a majority but are relatively weak on the substance of their messages.
Looks like another 'lesser' of evils election.
I don't think any candidate who supports our continued involvement in Iraq has any chance in the general election. It seems that all of the "front runners" support our continued military invovlement there. As such, it is not rocket science why the Republican candidates are unable to generate much enthusiasm among the electorate.
The more you know about McCain, the more he resembles a Democrat. He especially demonstrates that insulting Democrat trait of dismissing the the unwashed masses as not knowing what's good for them and that HE and his ilk do. Outside of having an 'R' next to his name, he's a big government elitist Democrat.
I Don't get it. They interviewed hordes of people in South Carolina who said that the illegal immigrant problem was an important issue. One woman spoke at a McCain q&a session about how her construction laborer son couldn't get work because illegals were undercutting him by working cheaper.
So, is anybody paying attention? Do people understand that McCain is a champion for open borders and amnesty and is, essentially, a big government democrat?
People deserve the government they get? I think so.
Romney really makes me wanna puke. This is what is meant by a "polished" "attractive" candidate?:
"The presidential hopeful met a friendly crowd at the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade here. The former Massachusetts governor often runs back and forth across streets during parades to greet people and today was no exception. He shook hands with ROTC members, tiny beauty queens, police officers and many parade-goers, including children screaming his name. He jumped off the Mitt Mobile to greet a waiting crowd, took a picture with some kids and young adults and awkwardly quipped, ”Who let the dogs out? Who who.”
He took pictures with many in the crowd and greeted one baby wearing a necklace saying, “Hey buddy! How’s it going? What’s happening? You got some bling bling here!”"
Seriously, he has no shame at all.
As for the convention being a brokered one and a new candidate emerging you should look at the various governors out there, particularly southern ones that could become attractive to the GOP.
Here is speculation on that scenario which if definitely interesting from John O'Sullivan by way of Lew Rockwell Blog:
Sanford
At this point for Republicans (didn't say conservatives) Romney is the only viable candidate. You may not like his 'politicking' but that's the way it's done, isn't it? And he knows that this is an essential part of getting elected.
Maybe if your boy Paul had done less preaching and more politicking, he’d still be viable. Well, maybe not.
Contrary to the way the press and his opponents like to depict him, he's probably the most complete candidate. Smart, savvy, most conservative (as compared with others in the field AMONG THOSE ABLE TO GET THE NOMINATION) with the ability to manage effectively and understand complex political, business and financial concepts.
Another thing that should sway people that he is the right candidate is that the liberal media, Democrats and leftists in general (and our resident faux “Republicans” McCain and Huckleberry) hate him and are afraid that he might get the nomination.
He’s the only Republican that can win the general election. Period.
