I Can't Drive 55

To millions of Americans, the Fourth of July symbolizes freedom. But for Senator John Warner the holiday weekend was an ocassion to cart out an idea that increases the federal government's control at the expense of individual liberty. Warner seeks to go back to the bad old days when the federal government set 55-miles-per-hour speed limits on local roads and highways. It isn't the federal government's business and isn't among their delegated powers, but, alas, Big Brother knows best.

Make no mistake about what's happening: for the Democrats it's all about taking away freedoms.

I doubt they really ever thought it through and more than likely thought they were acting like noble animals when in 96' Clinton vetoed an energy bill that would have made us much less dependent today or in 02' when Democrats in Congress wouldn't allow for a proposal by Bush that would have increased domestic drilling and refining.

But, by shear current economic circumstance, the Liberal Dems, their Green lobbies and the Eurocrats have succeeded with glee to watch people suffer all in the name of finally getting our gas prices to European levels to keep us on even par with the rest of the world, cause limitations to satisfy the funny “science” of Global Warming and push people into inefficient public transportation so that they can tell us where to go and when we can go there.

The automobile is ultimate tool of personal freedom. Limit it or take it away and now you have more control over people’s lives. The Libs/Dems know it and love it.

well i remember the days of long gas lines, 55mph and big gas guzzlers. then came small cheap cars and boom the big labor boys lost jobs. then things got better in the 80s and 90s ,the american attention span forgot about the 70s and the rides got BIGGER. now people live 100 miles from their workplace. now they drive 80, 90 mph to and from work. boo hoo , if driving 55 helps us save gas then so be it. get up 1hr. earlier and go to work. cuz we have young guys giving all to this nation at least we can drive slower. because our whole way of life depends on oil. sad but true.

If people want to pay the freight to drive big cars for whatever the reason, so be it. That’s the American way, isn’t it? Our freedoms include being able to make decisions to live the way we want as long as those decisions don’t negatively effect others. So if one does decide to drive a land boat or decide to drive really fast and pay the costs for that luxury for whatever ones own personal reasons, why not?

Anyway, this isn’t about conservation. It’s about economics and politics. And the suggestion that we go back to the disco days and regurgitate a dumb policy that ultimately saved little in fuel (difference between driving 55 or 65 is about 0.18 percent fuel savings) resources is just another way to limit freedoms in the guise of conservation.

There is plenty of fossil fuel still untapped to be had. And we should have it as oil currently runs the World’s Economy and will continue to for our immediate future. So, until an alternative energy source that offers the same concentrated power as a gallon of gasoline comes along, we are where we are.

Also, not sure what this has to do with our troops fighting in foreign lands. But, if your correlation is that they are sacrificing so we should be sacrificing, that just doesn’t hold water. In fact, it could be argued that the reasons those young people are sacrificing is to maintain the American lifestyle they and we have gotten used to.
