Are We Safer?

This weekend, a plot to blow up JFK airport, and some surrounding neighborhoods, by igniting an underground jet-fuel line, was broken up through aggressive law-enforcement tactics. Ditto for the foiled plot to kill soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In both instances, the use of informants was crucial in upsetting the plans of would-be terrorists. Since 9/11, there hasn't been a major attack within the United States by Islamic terrorists. This has not been the case for lack of effort. There have been many plots. But not one of the conspiracies got beyond the planning stages. Does not the Bush administration, amidst the frequent denunciations of its bone-headed war of choice in Iraq, deserve some credit for this?

Nope. It's Bush. The left will never give him credit for anything. That would deviate too far from their playbook.

Yes, the Bush administration should and does get credit for keeping us marginally safer. But not to be cynical or negative, it took 9/11 to wake us from our slumber and take seriously the security of this country. Before that, government was on cruise control. Also, not sure how that explains why we allow just ANYBODY to come waltzing in from Mexico. OTM's could likely be any illegal here with a terrorist agenda so it's great that these individual plots are foiled but as long as we can't control who is in this country and when, we continue to be wide open to those plotting to take us down violently.

Bush should get the credit. but the man has totally lost me. i thought he was the man to lead the fight on jihadis but i was wrong. he tip toes in irag and leaves the border wide open. he is a true lib.

I never thought I'd feel this way, but after this last round of blunders where he's in league with those willing to destroy this country, I now suffer from slight case of BDS. I can't stand listening to him or looking at him these days. Hate to agree with what the libs have been saying, but he is Howdy Doody with poor speaking skills.

There are two questions there - one in the title and one in the body of the post. To take the second one first, I think the answer is yes, Bush does deserve credit for thwarting numbers of would-be terrorist strikes in our country since 9/11. I'd be surprised if there were more than a few people following 9/11 who thought we'd be here in mid-2007 without having suffered another attack on our soil.

But I don't think this necessarily means we are safer now than then. Perhaps we here in the States are (at the moment), but it hasn't been safer for the tens of thousands of troops sent to Iraq, and especially not for the 3,495 who have died and the 25,549 who have been wounded over there. We've delivered ready targets to the terrorists' own backyard and have helped breed more terrorists as a result. Given blowback, this does not make us safer in the long-term.

Eventually, the ever larger number of terrorists will manage to circumvent our law enforcement efforts here. So Bush's demerits more than offset his credits.

Maybe so, but the responsibility is mostly with us, as the Government can only do so much. Until we have the courage to start treating all muslims with suspicion, (yes, quasi-discrimination), we will never be as safe as we could be.

No, don't think so. The only proof of anything that that offers is that you're a whacked out moonbat.

The disruption of this latest terrorist "plot" actually confirms what liberals have been saying: combatting terrorism is a matter of law enforcement. Bush's war in Iraq is just provoking more terrorism.

Posted by: Eric Wilds on June 6, 2007 01:58 PM

Really Eric? What about the first WTC attack? How about the USS Cole? Khobar? How about 3,000 Americans killed on 9/11? Did Bush's war provoke those terrorist attacks? Yes, I too agree that it should be a law enforcement issue but you people are nuts if you think that any new plots cooked up after Bush went into Iraq are the fruits of that action. And you're even nuttier if you think that when (and if) we pull out of Iraq they will stop.

One question asdf, where oh where are the plane debris on the Pentagon lawn? And why oh why can't we see any of the hundredes of surveillance camera tapes that were recording on that day? And why were there "terror drills" being conducted that same day, that emulated the exact scenario? Hmmmm... thats interesting isn't it? Or am I unamerican? Or perhaps delusional?

Safer? When U.S. Senators vote against an amendment to exclude known felon illegals from their amnesty bill, how can we think we're safe? And when a particular U.S. Senator opines in a public forum that he's worried about what 2 million felon illegals could do if not given amnesty, how can we think we're safe? These are the bozos sworn to protect us and our nation. F'ing scary! It's upside down man.

asdf,

My point is that the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq has not thwarted terrorism against this country. It's an irrelevant waste.

Posted by: Eric Wilds on June 7, 2007 06:02 PM

asdf-2 did that plane get abducted by UFOs ?Because it still hasn't landed yet according to you. If it didn't hit the Pentagon, where is it and its passengers? Are they too part of the conspiracy? You worthless piece of garbage.

Posted by: 911 no conspiracy on June 7, 2007 06:55 PM

Right, and to some extent I agree as I've not been a real fan of the war from the beginning. The sad fact is that terroism has been and will continue to be an issue ongoing.

Potential terrorism and homeland security runs hand in hand and is something we should deal with and take very seriously and if that means pulling national guard troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and posting them on our borders to stop illegal immigration, then so be it. Additionally we need to limit legal immigration and only allow people into this country only when they've gone through extensive background checks and once they're in the country, monitor them closely. Even then, some will slip through the cracks. But due diligence is essential.

Bottom line is that we need to stop pussy footing around with regard to our national security and take it much more seriously than we have in the past.
