Five Vermont towns have called for the impeachment of George W. Bush, a task reserved for the House of Representatives under the Constitution. But can you blame the Vermonters for misunderstanding the Constitution? Federal officials routinely involve themselves in local matters such as schools, fire departments, and minimum-age requirements for alcohol consumption and purchase. Isn't it about time that local officials attempted to usurp such powers reserved to the national government as defense, coining money, and presidential impeachment? It's only fair that such colossal misunderstandings of the Constitution run both ways.
Come on, Danielsan, before to many more decades, this Country won't pay any attention to The Constitution. When's the new book due out?
Isn't this the way our Founding Fathers intended it to be?
Ain't going to happen, but wouldn't it be interesting to see how the States might evolve when not interferred with by a big Federal Government.
Maybe that old hippie haven Vermont is on to something.
I don't think there's anything wrong with towns calling for the impeachment of the president. They aren't suggesting that they have the power to do so, they are simply registering their disgust, and rightly so.
Martin van Buren once called for individual states to raise the reserve requirements on the banks, when fractional reserve banking was causing crisises. He know there was a problem, but he also knew he didn't have the authority to intervene. I don't think him stating his opinion was interfering with his constitutional rights anymore than the vermont towns are.
Vermont is far from a Hippie Haven. Its definitely one of the most beautiful, safe, and pleasant states to be in. Most people I know there, hunt, ski, listen to bluegrass, and generally live the good life. If it weren't so cold, I would move.
And yes Dan, Vermont should start coining money and raising an army.
