Things that are less popular than President Bush.
Sorry to go $25,000 Pyramid on you. It's just really hard to clue in the true believers to how unpopular the president has become. It's also hard to impress upon the president's fans that, historically speaking, when presidents dip into the low '30s for approval ratings, it's catastrophic. They don't recover. President Bush's 50 percent approval ratings are long gone, and they're not coming back. Not now. Not ever.
A new Harris Interactive poll puts President Bush's job approval ratings at 29 percent. What explains? George W. Bush supports amnesty for illegal aliens and nation-building in Iraq. The American people are against illegal immigration and the president's war of choice. And it's not just a policy disagreement. It's the obstinacy. As the American people demand an end-game to America's experiment in democracy amongst the Muhammedans, President Bush defiantly proclaims that withdrawal is a project for some future administration. As the American people get so fed up with immigration lawlessness that they form posses and secure the border themselves, President Bush trudges on with his amnesty proposal. Sure, oil prices are high and the president has been especially inept the last year. But it's George W. Bush's steadfast refusal to abandon failed and foolish policies, in the face of public demands to do so, that pushed him below the Political Mendoza Line. Barring some national tragedy, he's there to stay. Not even the boogeymen of Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, or Nancy Pelosi can scare the American people into looking favorably upon George W. Bush again.
Dan, You are being too tough on George but I do agree with your conclusion. I think you were closer to the mark with your defense of George in your "worst president" post. We need to finish the job in Iraq and there is a big difference between pathway and amnesty. To our president's credit and maybe because he had less to lose, he has attempted to fix problems that have only gotten worse in the last thirty years.
How has he tried to fix our immigration problems? His problem, in many cases, is he has tried to "fix" problems the federal goverment has no business trying to fix.
There is no difference at all between "pathway" and amnesty Chris, who are you trying to fool?
So anyone think Chuck Hagel and Ron Paul could be cajoled into running as a third party candidate for president/vice-president in '08? Or even attempting to get into the GOP primaries first? That would be an incredible ticket.
You remember that time...when...he looked into Putin's soul???
Yeah...that was awesome.
The Left is no worry. But a challenge from the Right, or the threat of it, hopefully will shake up the inside-the-Beltway GOP.
Holy cow! German PM Angela Merkl has a 72% approval rating, according this article.
A great weekend to everyone at FF.
yea chris that was a laffer. putins the next stalin!
On the big issues of the day I feel we have been rolled and screwed by big govt. over the last 20-30 years. I like the sound of largely keeping big govt. out of the free markets. So, we can only blame ourselves.
On:
Taxes. Bush has made some progress but has failed to present a new, sorely needed system.
Healthcare. While it would be great to get govt. out of the way; it probably makes more sense for govt. to pay for drugs rather than proceedures.
Energy. Total fiasco, but I think Bush is the first president to get any bill passed.
Immigration.Again, a total fiasco. Has turned Americans against Americans...thanks, congress! I think it is inexcusable that no president has protected the borders and has refused to get the illegals and the businesses that hire them to account.
Social Security. Another fiasco, or better framed as a Ponzi scheme. Already in the process of turning the young against the old...thanks, congress. George Bush tried but got laughed out of town; thanks to the demos. and the media.
Iraq. Maybe I am the last to feel this way but I feel that George Bush was right, courageous, patient and had and still has a plan that might change the dynamics that have failed in that area for the last sixty years. All in all, I am so angry I would get rid of the whole bunch!
I take back my call for a Hagel-Paul ticket since Hagel caved on immigration. There isn't anyone left who is even respectable in the Senate.
