Funerals are to commend the souls of the dead to heaven, not to condemn the souls of the living to hell. Liberals don't get this. The nation does, which is why the politicized Coretta Scott King funeral, just like the politicized Paul Wellstone funeral, doesn't sit well with normal people--and not simply for the reasons that all funerals don't sit well with normal people.

Answer, because it was a political event, a political commemoration, not a funeral as normally experienced by private citizens of private citizens. Take note of the reaction of the "mostly black crowd" to the attacks on Bush by Carter and Lowery . . . they stood up and cheered, sometimes with a couple minute's long ovations . . . that never happens at the funerals I have sadly attended.

Good question, but your answer could not be more wrong. Coretta Scott King was elevated to the lofty position of figurehead for the civil rights movement, mostly by the mere act of being the wife of Martin Luther King, Jr. Sure she tried to carry on his mission after his untimely death, but it was a weak, transparent effort. It is not her fault, someone like MLK only comes along once every several generations. Given her stature in American culture, it was virtually mandatory that President Bush attend the funeral and deliver a eulogy on behalf of the American public - which he did with great grace and eloquence. Then came the bitter old man Jimmy Carter who could only find hate in his heart on this day when he should have been honoring Ms. King. And Bill Clinton keeping up his phony act, saw this as an opportunity, along with his triangulating wife, to use it to push her impending campaign.

The black community - at least those who were fortunate enough to get admission to this "event" - aren't really interesting in civil rights or equality. They figure that the rest of society owes them something. And the left-leaning speakers from Lowery to Clinton all made the same old promises to pay up. But carter and Clinton already had their chances. Nothing of any consequence changed for most blacks during or as a result of these panderers. President Bush as at least tried to get some equal opportunity into those communities with NCLB and school voucher programs. But "leaders" like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton aren't interested in opportunity. They want handouts - freebies that are "owed" to them. Man, we could use someone like MLK today to lead this community back into the light. Or Malcom X, who was murdered for opposing the scam.

You can cite the cheering crowds in the church that day as some kind of evidence, but consider this. Blacks are a minority in America. As a result, their cheering, whooping, and disrespectful behavior - even if every black felt that way - is still a minority view. And many blacks DON'T feel that way. Second, I submit that the inner-city black young person who is doing drugs, robbing stores, joining violent gangs and is likely headed to a lifetime of stays in correctional facilities - an all to often occurrence - probably couldn't care less about any of these goings on and likely doesn't even know who Coretta Scott King was.
