Sandy Berger, Document Burglar

Sandy Berger is expected to plead guilty to taking classified documents today. Berger's punishment will include a $10,000 fine and the relinquishing of his security clearance for three years (like he would even need it until, at the earliest, 2009 anyhow). Last summer, the Clinton-era national security advisor claimed that the documents and notes, which he stuffed in his pants, were removed from the National Archives "inadvertently." It was all an "honest mistake," according to Berger. Recognizing the diverse life experiences of the readership, I ask: what items have you "inadvertently" shoved in your pants, only to have, like Sandy Berger, some heartless security guard disbelieve your innocence?

Maury, tell us about that wallet. Didn't you say in an earlier post that someone actually stole a wallet from you?

I once set off an airport security alarm having a zucchini wrapped in tin foil stuffed in my trousers. But that was when I was with Spinal Tap.

I once inadvertantly stuffed cigarettes in my pants in K-mar----no wait, that was stealing.....

C'mon, fellas, he was simply tucking his shirt in and these papers got caught up in his shirttails. I've done that a million times usually when I am in music stores where my favorite cds are.

It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever.

Bill Clinton once inadvertently stuffed Monica Lewinsky into his pants. Not sure if it was to hide her or to smuggle her out though.

A man stealing National Security secrets!? I hold a TS clearance and if I got caught doing that I would go to Leavenworth for 10 years. Ahh...what happened to the good ole days when you get caught stealing Govt secrets, you get put in front of a firing squad.

Would have to agree with that. As a lowly swab holding a TS clearance, if I had decided to stuff a couple of documents containing sensitive information about ship or aircraft movements, I would have been seriously screwed.

Wouldn’t be no $10K fine and a slap on the azz for good luck.

This just shows how there are two sets of laws in this country. One for the Sandy Burglars and another for the rest of us.

Once when I was 15 I hung around the music department at the local K-Mart for about 45 minutes before I decided to leave. Just as I was about to exit the store, the security guard stopped me to inform me that I must have inadvertantly put a cassette in my pants. My parents were inadvertantly called, I was inadvertantly brought to the police station and inadvertantly given community service. On previous occasions, I inadvertantly got all the way home with these cassettes that were inadvertantly in my pants.

How many here expected a full confession? Is there any politician in U.S. history who confessed to his crimes?
