"Scooter" Libby reportedly told a federal grand jury that he learned of Valerie Plame's identity as a CIA employee from journalists. The New York Times reports today that Libby's notes indicate that he learned of Plame from his boss, Vice President Dick Cheney. This may or may not be a legal problem. This is a political problem.
Am I crazy to assume that discussions about classified information between two people who are cleared to discuss it is not an issue?? This investigation is has taken a life of itself where it is no longer about any crime, but solving the mystery.
There are varying levels of classification. If Scooter only had access to Secret and Cheney divulged Top Secret info, then that would be a problem. All of it is supposed to be given on a need to know basis as well. So what was Scooter's need to know?
Isn't leaking grand jury testimony a felony?
Good point, Will. Shouldn't knowingly publishing leaked grand jury testimony be a crime too? For that matter, given the guilt of Libby et al., shouldn't a journalist be guilty, too?
So - Cheney falls on the grenade (better than taking Rove out) and resigns; C.Rice moves into the VP slot and then runs for Prez as a sitting VP in '08.
Or not...
Don't forget... This is the same "Scooter" who served as Mark Rich's lawyer.
