Had Charles Guiteau leaked damaging information to the press about the administration of James A. Garfield rather than shot the twentieth president, he not only might have scored the post he coveted but he would be celebrated as a hero today. There's more than one way to bring down a president who passes you over for a job.
Whatever salves the Republican conscience.
Happy birthday, Short.
Guido
More like whatever strokes the narcissistic generation's beatification of the press corps as some blessed assembly. The media and its personalities have long been suffering from a collective cult of personality and Watergate opened the floodgates to that. The news that "deep throat" has been revealed is now a time for the media to celebrate themselves, and will likely be observed as a holiday in journalism schools and news rooms for years to come.
Happy Birthday Short. Have a strawberry Shortcake.
Thanks Guido and Finbar--
I nearly got sick yesterday watching Aaron Brown. He's always particularly dramatic and vain as a journalist anyway, and yesterday it was downright hero-worship of journalists and of Felt. I think the Feds should charge Felt with leaking classified info, and the Post should fine their two ex-journalists for partial fabrication of the stories. Just on principle.
It is too bad that deep throat didn't turn out to be Pat Buchanan. That really would have thrown a wrench in the works. Imagine how the press would have reacted.
Happy Birthday Short, dunno if it is belated or not at this point.
Hahah it's funny to think of Garfield's assassin being remembered as a hero.
