"Barry Goldwater long ago assailed Dwight D. Eisenhower for presiding over a 'Dime Store New Deal,'" Robert Novak writes. "That stinging rebuke no longer would be appropriate for today's Republicans. They outdo Democrats on pork and are in the same ballpark on entitlements. Even Katrina and now Rita do not restrain them." Novak reports that House Republicans who called for cuts to offset hurricane relief spending got chastised by the Republican leadership in a "closed-door" meeting last week. And when will the Republican leadership be holding a private meeting to castigate GOP big-spenders?
Never.
THe republicans have a clever plan. That is, tax breaks for the very wealthy with a kickback to finance their next campaign. In effect our treasury is financing their campaign and our debt is compared with some astronomical economic number like total GDP to make it look trivial.
Guido, I'm afraid you know too much. But since you know what happens when you get this close, I suppose there's no harm in telling you the whole story. The Republicans are indeed doing exactly what you say. But it's all part of a vast conspiracy to bring back slavery and save the country from rap music.
Oh, there's quite a bit that involves FEMA as well...but I'll save that for another post.
Goodbye, Mr. Guido. But first, reflect on life for a moment:
"Life... is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable, because all you get back is another box of chocolates. You're stuck with this undefinable whipped-mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there's nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in a while, there's a peanut butter cup, or an English toffee. But they're gone too fast, the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits, filled with hardened jelly and tooth-crunching nuts, and if you're desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left... is an empty box... filled with useless, brown paper wrappers."
Never, is right. Politics has become less about principal and much more about keeping "the job".
Add into that the fact that fiscally impatient (read: we want it all now!!) Baby-Boomers are now in control of government and people don't pay enought attention, and you have a recipe for spending and debt disaster.
