Bush Picks Miers for Supreme Court

Candidate George W. Bush promised to nominate Scalias and Thomases if made president. Today, President George W. Bush nominated Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. Did Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia spend the Reagan years as Democrats or give money to Lloyd Bentsen and Al Gore?

What in the H-E-double hockey sticks is wrong with this guy? Did we totally miss the fact throughout his first term that he is truly as dumb as a stump ?

And this foolishness of keeping the nomination wittled down to a thin margin for a woman or a minority! Whatever happened to the best candidate?

I've been informed that there is substantial precedent that the nominee for Supreme Court Chief Justice needn't have Supreme Court experience. But, nominating a Supreme Court Justice who has never been a Judge? Does this make any sense whatsoever? And a closet liberal at that.

NO. Now we get to see who is calling the shots in the GOP. Is it the liberals/"moderates" like those in the WH and the Specters of the party (who Bush saved from getting defeated in his last primary). Or will any authentic conservatives rise up to defeat this candidate from a terrible, unpopular, incompetent, and lame-duck president?

Actually, Republicans in the Senate won't be able to defeat Meirs anyway b/c the Dems are going to gladly vote for one of their own. They know a Souter when they see one.

When, oh when, will conservatives realize the Republican party of warfare and welfare is not going to turn back the social revolution foisted on the country by tyrrannical judges, nor the destruction of our constitutional federated republic by the ever-growing State?

This man is simply immature. Appointing a political friend from Texas who happens to be a lawyer... to the SC for life!? Let alone that he is in the process breaking campaign promises to his only remaining constituency.

I bet this lady feels like she hit the jackpot thanks to one of the biggest suckers to ever to have this much power.

What's with the Texas crap? How many times did W mention Texas or Dallas etc in that little intro? Why are Texans so into themselves? And why does something that stupid have to affect the Supreme Court? This guy is an unmitigated disaster for conservatives. Oh, except for tax cuts. Great.

I voted for Georgey-Boy because I wanted a conservative, fiscally responsible president.

I want my vote back.

The superiority Texas is undeniable. That is, other things being equal, a Texan is better than a Marylander, say. The problem here is other things are certainly NOT equal.

I agree with this statement (from an opponent to her nomination quoted on Drudge): "The President's nomination of Miers is a betrayal of the conservative, pro-family voters whose support put Bush in the White House in both the 2000 and 2004 elections and who were promised Supreme Court appointments in the mold of Thomas and Scalia."

I hope the Republicans get swept out of office next November. And while the pundits will surely blame such a defeat on the war, it will rest squarely on the Miers nomination.

Unfortunately, I agree. It is official. Conservatives throughout the country have been sold out.

I fear that the next two elections will see conservatives staying home in droves. That is sad because it only means that Democrats will win and the few true conservatives in congress won't get the support of the spineless "moderates" to stop their agenda.

I hope that isn't the case, but we could very well be facing the re-emergence of a strangle hold on all branches of government by the left.

The biggest problem with that is that, once they get their agenda enacted, it will be virtually impossible to rescind.

Can you say "Nationalized Medicine", "National Gun Registries", "Punitive taxation policies", "Taxation and Regulation of the internet"? Etc. Etc. Etc.

Maybe I'll start looking for property in a free country...you know the kind...the ones where the government is too busy being corrupt and inept to pay any attention to what the people are doing and basically lets them fend for themselves...like maybe Mexico. I hear there's plenty of work there what with all the American jobs going there and all. And, heck...once I'm a Mexican citizen, I can wade across the river and get free medical care.

Good one Curtis. That sounds like a viable plan.

Me? Ireland in five.

This appears to be a terrible pick. Yet another stealth candidate. Unfortunately it does not surprise me. George W. Bush is either a liar or he is a bad judge of character. After all, he is the guy who once referred to Vladimir Putin as his "friend" or something to this effect. Actually, if we could convince our Senators to filibuster this candidate, it seems we would have good grounds for doing so. 1.) She seems to have no judicial experience. 2.) She is a Bush crony. These two things alone should immediately disqualify her from this position. At this time, I can only hope and pray Bush knows something the rest of us do not. Given Bush's bad track record at judging the character of others, I don't trust this nominee nor do I trust Bush. Right now I would have to say George W. Bush is the worst President in the history of the country for Conservatives and for all Americans.

Wouldn't be too proud Ralph. To date, Texas has produced two failed buffoons as Presidents.

Maybe it's that belief in regional/state superiority that doesn't allow them to see beyond the Texas border.

I dont trust Bush.
asdf- I'll see you in Ireland!

Posted by: Pdiddy on October 3, 2005 02:34 PM

For the record, Bush is not a native Texan. And of the many things I'd call LBJ, "bafoon" isn't one of them.

The pride Texans feel at being from Texas is a bit like the knowledge the philosopher has after seeing the Good: it can't be explained to lesser folks.

Posted by: Ralph on October 3, 2005 03:49 PM

Yes. It is true that Texans ARE legends in their own minds.

Most who I've met have been less impressive to others than to themselves.

Posted by: asdf on October 3, 2005 04:06 PM

What was that saying about Texas? All they have there is steers and . . . something or other.

Conservative Revolution, Rest in Peace.

Pat Buchanon has an excellent column in Human Events online that sums up this pick quite well (were she not a woman and Bush's friend, she would not have been considered).

All Republican presidents since Eisenhower have botched court picks. Was is naive to think this president would be any different? If he hasn't already done so, I think this president has crossed a line where he is doing more harm than good to the conservative movement.

What an embarrassing pick. I hope the Senate votes her down. At least I know my guys Ted K & John K will do so.

Newt for President

Posted by: Ben-T on October 3, 2005 10:30 PM

Salimander for President.

Posted by: asdf on October 4, 2005 11:03 AM

On the contrary. Those two liberal stiffs from Taxachusetts will gladly vote for one of their own.

Posted by: asdf on October 4, 2005 11:21 AM

Could Harriet Miers be a double quota nomination?

Check out Drudge.
