Wrong Lessons Learned on Illegal Immigration Since 9/11

A little more two years after 9/11, George W. Bush proposed granting amnesty to illegal immigrants in this country. The idea was about as popular as naming Ted Bundy homecoming queen. It was quickly dropped.

The administration already has in effect instituted its amnesty program on illegal immigrants--or perhaps more accurately, the companies that hire them. In the last year of George H.W. Bush's presidency, the government levied more than a thousand fines against companies that hired illegal aliens. In the second year of George W. Bush's presidency, the government imposed just 13 such fines. The information can be found in this week's Time magazine cover story, which is generating a definite buzz.

The concept is simple. If you break the law, you should be punished. When you don't punish lawbreakers, you reward the crimes they commit. Take away the incentive to commit a crime, and instances of that crime will decrease. Illegal immigration is a crime--get it, "illegal" immigration.

Ignoring law also undermines democracy. The people and their representatives made the law. There's a proper way to repeal law. It's by working through the legislature or referenda. Refusing to enforce the law isn't one of these proper methods. It's an end-around on democracy.

Traditional arguments against illegal immigration focused on crime, economics, government spending, and culture. Today, security concerns make the issue more of a matter of life and death.

There are 15 million illegal immigrants in America. Most of them are here to make a better life for themselves and their families. Some, though, are habitual criminals. Others are welfare cheats. A tiny few are here to commit acts of terrorism against us. When the notion of terrorists illegally entering this country to kill us seemed the stuff of fantasy, a more lax immigration policy might have been more understandable. We don't live in that world anymore. We don't live in that world anymore because of nineteen immigrants.

We have immigration laws. As long as they're on the books, they should be enforced.

We have immigration laws, but unfortunately we also have immigration judges that prevent the full force of those laws.

Uncontrolled immigration and the lax standards we have adopted to handle illegal aliens will eventually destroy this country.

Already, there are parts of the U.S. that operate like banana republics and more are springing up every year.

Large metropolis' like L.A. and Miami are full of illegals and legals alike who refuse to assimilate and adapt to our Western based culture. They work very hard to maintain standards from their home countries while living under the laws and comfort provided by the U.S..

Our leaders seem to powerless to do anything to slow the flow and/or force our 'new citizens' to become Americans.

Very dissappointed in Bush for the way he's handled this.

If the Dems had a real candidate, I would consider throwing him out just for these reasons alone.

Immigration is a far more vital issue than, say, how one did or didn't serve ones country 35 years ago. Being soft on immigration is to be soft on terrorism. I would n't bring any of these candidates to a rock fight. Parts of LA are already under the control of terrorists, as are parts of Miami and other border cities. DB you are a bomb tosser and a fool

That's right. i am a fool. read the 911 Commision's report. It says immigration is a net benefit for the war on terror because it helps add to the diversity of the United States.

The reason LA and Miami are controled by Gangs (not terrorists, street gangs) has much to do with how easily guns are to come by in these parts.

Yes db, if the 911 commission said that then it's got to be so.

Uncontrolled immigration is fast turning the US into one vast airport of ethnic strangers. If one's a believer in diversity than that's fine, but at least be honest; thirty years ago the 911 hijackers would have had a much more difficult time blending in with America's biracial society. Arab-American enclaves have made it easier for Islamic terrorist to move within our boarders unnoticed.

The kind of tolerance for 'diversity' that allows uneducated third world people to bring their cultural and economic problems to this country can not be a good thing.

The greatness of this country was built on old world hierarchies and values brought here by Western Europeans. It has been enriched by many other cultures who brought their own brand of values but still worked hard to be Americans first and ethnics second.

Today, we are faced with an immigrant population that, for the most part, refuse to learn the ways of their new land and by not adapting, bring the problems of their countries of origin here to stay.

I still believe that the 'melting pot' enriches us as a nation but most new citizens (legal or illegal) these days refuse to melt.

Anybody who blames access to guns as the reason for gang violance and related problems, is an idiot.

Nuff' said.

It's not blame. It's recognition of a contributing factor.

DB: watch your mouth. If reading the comments on Flynnfiles gets you so angry you can't resist cussing, then maybe you stop reading the comments on Flynnfiles and join a Yoga class.

Just how does "diversity" improve anyone or anything? What exactly is "diversity"? Does it include those whose thinking is to the right of say, Alan Alda?

Posted by: J Hugh Bahls on September 15, 2004 12:05 PM

Ethnic diversity helps to Rob the terrorists of thier argument that the United States is a great satan. How can a Great Satan be home to some of the largest Mosques in the world? Did you know that a good hundred Muslims died in the trade center attacks? Linguistic diversity helps the United States fight the war on terror by providing native linguisitc skills to our intelligence services, something vital for this day and age. Further, racial diversity adds to the beautiful array of skin colors and hair texures that American men may find attractive.
