Conservatives Dissatisfied With Bush

Columnist Sam Francis weighs-in on the mounting conservative dissatisfaction with President George W. Bush. He writes: "The Iraq boondoggle fulfills all that anti-war conservatives warned against; the president's amnesty for illegal aliens is a disaster, as are the vast increase of government power in the Patriot Act, the swelling of the federal budget, and the president's lackluster embrace of social issues like the pro-life and anti-homosexual marriage causes."

The fault for all this, Francis suggests, is not so much Bush but the conservatives who promoted him in the first place. "The conservatives wanted to elect a Republican," Francis concludes, "and they didn't much care who it was or what he believed."

After eight years of Bill Clinton, conservatives were willing to overlook ideological shortcomings for what was politically expedient. With the threat of a John Kerry presidency, what makes anyone think they'll act any differently in 2004?

There is truth and then there is Truth. While I concur with many of the truths Francis has written, they obscure the Truth he wishes to overlook: Bush is an honest and decent man who is actively seeking to do what is best for the country, and even for the world. Bush's largest fault is not that he is a right-leaning moderate, it is that he is an honest and decent man and desires that the opposition do the same, even though they seem constitutionally incapable of doing so.

The media tries to seeds of discord in every conservative crack, and our dear Francis is doing just that. I agree, George H.W. Bush cannot be considered a hardline right-wing radical. He was not my first choice for President four years ago. He has done many things which have angered his base. Still, nobody is going to jump ship. Why? WAR! If there is anything true of the conservatives in America, it is that they support the NATION first. America is at war. John Kerry (the great war protester) wants to pull us out of Iraq and let everything go to hell with the War on Terror. It should be obvious to an eggplant that we simply cannot allow this. The conservatives will stand with Bush.
