They're called the dumbest generation. But the young essayists in the Jonah Goldberg-edited Proud to Be Right: Voices of the Next Conservative Generation do not exhibit the signs of Xbox overload or text-message grammar. Read my review of the book in The American Conservative, where I discuss whether "professional conservatives" have imposed conformity on conservatives or the success of the Right has ensured a cacaphony of conservatisms.
"Mortals who do not accept the way of truth, sunk in metaphysical error, know nothing at all. Deaf, dazed, and blind, they can be called two-headed because of the internal inconsistencies of their beliefs." -Parmenides
As Douthat correctly claims, conservatives have no policy agenda aside from deregulation (which leads to deaths in the oil and coal industry, widespread death and destruction of ecology, cancer and reduced rates of IQ for human beings, and the potential annihilation of the human species), lower taxes for the top 1% (which now holds 24% of all wealth; in 1979 the top 1% held 7% of all wealth), and forcing janitors and cashiers to work until they're 70 and reducing their entitlement benefits (which are the legal codification of human rights--it's telling that conservatives oppose them). Amazingly, the ethical egoist scum smugly claim the moral high ground! They think that because they viciously defend zygotes and other fertilized eggs in varying states of development that they are "protecting life", yet they have done everything they can to facilitate 1,000,000+ deaths from homicidal and irrational pre-emptive wars, and are even unwilling to do what is necessary to reduce abortions (simply put, strengthen welfare rights, as other countries like France have 10% the per capita number of abortions America has).
The cognitive dissonance and self-righteousness of the right is overwhelming.
What hoot. Leftists are all concerned about the cancer rates and reduced IQ’s of workers but champion murder by abortion at any stage of human development as a right, consider euthanasia to be perfectly acceptable and have no problem pushing a national rationed healthcare program that will be completely desensitized to the medical needs of most Americans and where some government bureaucrat will make decisions on who lives or dies based on actuarial statistics.
These are the same folks who have zero problem getting us into wars where hundreds of thousands of Americans have come to an unnatural end.
For people who claim to have a soft human side, there are some inconsistencies and I seriously don't doubt that all of this alleged caring is more about power and control than it is about compassion and improving the human condition.
"...every regulation represents a restriction of liberty, every regulation has a cost." - Thatcher
I miss a common sense Conservative like Margaret big time. The World should too.
From the looks of things, Goldberg selected authors to portray a Young Right to his liking. A generation of milquetoasts who will do little to challenge the status quo. A big, inclusive tent where open homosexuals are celebrated. It's a movement, from what I can gather, that stands for very little other than the following propositions:
(1) Killing muslims in the name of "democracy" is ok.
(2) Surrender in the culture wars.
(3) Free and open immigration.
(4) Not eliminating government, but making it more efficient.
